Metabolic Bone Diseases

Dear Colleagues,

Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease, predisposing to fractures and posing a considerable disease burden in post-menopausal women and older men. Other metabolic bone diseases receive even less attention. Rickets (in growing children) and osteomalacia result from lack of calcium, vitamin D, or hypophosphatemia. These disorders have not been eliminated, as some believe; rather, their prevalence may be increasing. Rare genetic causes have shed light on the unique pathophysiology of calcium and phosphate mineral homeostasis. Rare bone diseases such as X-linked hypophosphatemia and hypophosphatasia are now treatable diseases, thanks to new therapeutic options. Osteogenesis imperfecta is another rapidly expanding field with increasingly recognized underlying genetic mutations. On the opposite side of the spectrum, insights into the pathophysiology of high-bone-mass disorders and sclerosing bone dysplasias has resulted in the identification of several therapeutic targets for osteoporosis, such as the inhibition of sclerostin and other Wnt signaling suppressors. The latest nosology on rare bone diseases encompasses no less than 461 conditions in 42 categories.

The present Special Issue aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art and provide examples of novel research directions in osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases, both in children and adults.

We invite all colleagues to submit manuscripts (research articles, case reports, and reviews) to this Special Issue. Submitted manuscripts may cover all aspects, ranging from pathophysiology and the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, to other common and rare metabolic bone diseases and disorders of mineral metabolism.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Osteology is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
