Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recently, environmental pollutants of water and soil, of both organic and inorganic origin, have arisen as a serious and global unresolved problem. The long-term and uncontrolled occurrence of these compounds in the environment might negatively affect ecosystems as well as pose a serious threat to living organisms. Therefore, there is a rapid need to optimize currently existing as well as to develop novel, sustainable, and efficient approaches for the removal of toxic environmental pollutants. In this context, techniques based on the direct application of oxygen and/or methods that use oxygen as a supporting factor for the remediation or conversion of hazardous compounds appear as promising, effective, and sustainable alternatives for currently used approaches. An increasing number of possibilities to design and develop novel oxygen-based techniques for wastewater and soil treatment give the opportunity to apply these materials, for instance, to sophisticated catalytic and biocatalytic solutions. However, further scientific studies are still required, as the development of novel oxygen-based solutions for the removal of pollutants acts as a driving force for their widespread application and effective environmental protection.

This Special Issue welcomes articles concerning the application of oxygen and oxygen-based techniques for the removal of environmental pollutants of various origin. We hope to attract both original research papers related to the fundamental science and practical application of oxygen and oxygen-based techniques used for the removal of environmental pollutants as well as review articles describing the current state of knowledge.
