Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the last decade, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have proven to be extremely convenient and invaluable tools for biological and biomedical applications. Ultrasmall (<2 nm) gold nanoparticles offer an elegant solution to the need for simple and sensitive diagnostic readouts due to their discrete electronic and molecular-like properties. In this context, fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have attracted much more attention than other metal nanomaterials, which could be easily attributed to their facile preparation, low cytotoxicity, high photostability, good biocompatibility, and ability to be readily functionalized with other biomolecules. Unlike large gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), ultra-small fluorescent AuNCs do not display surface plasmon resonance absorption in the visible region but possess apparent fluorescence emission in the near-infrared (NIR) to visible region. Environmental factors such as pH level, ionic strength, and temperature have significant impacts on their fluorescence properties. Benefitting from these excellent properties, fluorescent AuNPs hold great promise in labeling, biosensing, bioimaging, and targeted cancer therapy applications, in vivo disease monitoring for early diagnosis of cancer, in vivo drug screening and protease activity determination, etc. The purpose of the present Special Issue is to present the latest advances in the field of gold nanoparticles for biomedical applications to improve the diagnosis and pharmacological treatment of several diseases via toxicological considerations of clinically applicable gold nanoparticles.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceuticals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
