Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Modern agriculture requires an energy input at all stages along the agri-food chain. Therefore, energy access is crucial for the agricultural sector and food systems to meet the growing food demand. However, access to energy is still a major obstacle to agricultural production and rural development, especially in developing countries. On the other hand, local prices of energy carriers have increased because of changing energy and environmental policies. A top priority now for the agricultural community is to find more sustainable ways of producing energy and make it accessible to landowners, businesses, and rural communities. In the last few years, the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy has grown rapidly along the chain of food production, such as access to water for irrigation, drying and storage of crop products. There is a need to accelerate the development of renewable energies, but this acceleration can only be based on scientific research. This Special Issue, “Renewable Energy Modelling and Application in Agriculture and Food Systems”, intends to present ongoing and novel examples of renewable energy design and optimization in agriculture, as well as to explore socio-economic and environmental implications of using renewable energy in agriculture and food systems. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Renewable energy in agriculture and food systems: opportunities and challenges
  • Solar-powered on-farm irrigation and crop production
  • Renewable energy in agricultural systems
  • Socio-economic impact of renewable energy
  • Environmental impact of renewable energy
  • Optimization and application of renewable energy in agriculture
  • Life cycle thinking (life cycle assessment, life cycle costing and social life cycle assessment) of renewable energy systems in agriculture and food systems

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
