Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The articles that will appear in this issue all explore the ethical, social, and political implications and deployments of Hindu narratives and rituals in the contemporary world. They focus on current Hindu contexts, both in India and across the globe. Collectively, these articles accomplish two tasks: (1) they consider ethical, social, and/or political directives and attempts at persuasion that are articulated or adumbrated in Hindu narrative and ritual contexts; and (2) they examine the use of Hindu stories and practices in the contemporary world to promote, suppress, nuance, or critique particular ethical, social, and political directives. We pay special attention to issues of caste, gender, religion, and class as potential sites of ethical, social, and political contestation. Collectively, we draw on prototypical Hindu texts and practices as well as film, social media, contemporary literature, diaspora contexts, and global and transnational Hinduisms. How do these narratives and practices convey particular ethical, social, or political postures in the contexts in which they are deployed? What are the broader implications of their ethical, social, and political entanglements?
