Challenges in Endocrine Tumors

Dear Colleagues,

The most common endocrine malignancy is papillary thyroid carcinoma, whose incidence has rapidly increased worldwide in the last thirty years, mainly due to extensive implementation of cancer screening and wide availability of neck ultrasound. By contrast, other types of thyroid cancers are rare diseases, including follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma as well as adrenocortical carcinoma, parathyroid carcinoma, malignant pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma, or neuroendocrine tumors. Endocrine tumors constitute a heterogeneous group and differ in clinical course, aggressiveness, hormonal activity and, finally, in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Such a heterogeneous nature, on the one hand, and a rarity of the disease, on the other hand, give rise to the numerous diagnostic and therapeutic challenges we face in the clinic on a daily basis.

This Special Issue is a platform for sharing our experiences with endocrine tumors, demonstrating the difficulties associated with the diagnostics or treatment decision-making in these patients.
