Systemic Risk in Ecological and Socio-Economic Networks

Dear Colleagues,

Ever escalating volatility, rising uncertainty, increasing complexity and multiplying ambiguity are critical features of the decision-making realities of the present time. Consequently, the world is becoming increasingly prone to systemic risks that are different in nature. Systemic risk refers to the potential of small and local disturbances to trigger domino effects cascading throughout the system and endangering the system’s functioning and wellbeing. Systemic risk is highly pertinent for safety research with major overarching challenges ranging from understanding and anticipation of impact to managing and mitigation of these risks, given the fact that the highest vulnerabilities may be observed far away and in different jurisdictions from where the risk originates.

This Special Issue will focus on systemic risk in ecological and socio-economic networks. While these systems may be very different in nature, scholars have been inspired by the similarities of their underlying network structures, which encourage utilizing similar concepts and approaches for their analyses. We welcome different types of manuscript submissions, including theoretical and conceptual issues, up-to-date reviews (scoping, integrative, systematic reviews and meta-analyses), and original research articles based on quantitative, qualitative or mixed-method approaches and applications.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Safety is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
