Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The many environmental challenges that lead to climate or agricultural crises around the world makes us think of novel technology that supports a faster recovery of our natural ecosystems. Many works on applied entomology or plant science look at the benefits of human-led ecological communities that positively interfere in macroscale ecosystem using active agents, such as insects. We envision that Internet-enabled biocyber interfaces (or cyber insects) coupled with living insects will revolutionise the way we manage natural ecosystems by controlling their behaviour and communication with the environment, termed hereafter as the Internet of Living Things.

However, there are many existing challenges to existing technology that inhibit a wide and reliable use of it. Currently technology is based on short-range communication systems (WI-FI, Bluetooth), with no handling of signal effects, no battery life management, and many others. The idea of making these devices Internet-enabled will also pose further power and communication challenges.

This Special Issue will present the most recent advances with respect to the theoretical foundations and practical applications of the Internet of Living Things.

Prospective authors are cordially invited to submit their original manuscripts (research or survey/tutorial articles) on (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Communication-theoretic foundation of the Internet of Living Things;
  • Biocyber interfaces design and implementation for the Internet of Living Things;
  • Fundamental performance limits of the Internet of Living Things;
  • Algorithms and protocols design for the Internet of Living Things;
  • Experimental results, measurements, and testbed implementations of the Internet of Living Things;
  • Software-defined design and implementation of the Internet of Living Things;
  • AI-inspired control and orchestration of the Internet of Living Things;
  • Applications for the Internet of Living Things.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
