Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The 9th FOAN International Workshop on Fiber Optics in Access Networks will be held on 25–27 October 2021 in a hybrid format. The primary goal of FOAN2021 is to bring together and present the latest research in the field of fiber optics technologies. The idea behind the workshop is to create opportunities to learn new things by gathering scientists and experts from academia, industry, and operators in the field that will share their knowledge, experience, and ideas during the workshop. As a part of a special session on “Security in Communication Networks”, we will also focus on sensors. We warmly invite researchers to submit their contributions to this Special Issue. Topics for the Special Session on “Security in Communication Networks” include (but are not limited to):

security and privacy in communication networks; attacks on telecommunications and networking; physical layer security; security protocols; network intrusion detection and prevention; data leakage/loss prevention/protection; QKD and quantum-based secure communications; quantum sensing; sensors in broadband networks; IoT sensors and actuators; optical fiber sensors.

This paper aims to evaluate detection algorithms for perimeter security systems based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). Our own designed and developed sensor system was used for the measurement. The main application of the system is in the area the perimeter fencing intrusion detection. The system is unique thanks to the developed motherboard, which contains a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) that takes care of signal processing. This allows the entire system to be integrated into a 1U rack chassis. A polygon containing two different fence types and also cable laid underground in a plastic tube was used for testing. Edge detection algorithms using the Sobel and Prewitt operators are considered for post-processing. The comparison is made based on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values calculated for each event. Results of algorithms based on edge detection methods are compared with the conventional differential method commonly used in Φ-OTDR systems. Full article

Optical fiber communications are essential for all types of long- and short-distance transmissions. The aim of this paper is to analyze the previously presented security risks and, based on measurements, provide the risk level evaluation. The major risk is the possibility of inserting a splitter into the optical distribution network and capturing a portion of the entire spectrum, i.e., all channels in the optical fiber. Another significant security risk is crosstalk on multiplexers in networks with wavelength division multiplexing. The paper covers the macrobend attenuation evaluation of fiber and back-reflection measurements. Based on the measurements, risks were evaluated for both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks and, lastly, the paper covers crosstalk measurements of an optomechanical switch. Finally, all individual risks are evaluated according to the severity, and a proposal for risk minimization is provided. Full article
