Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The growth in the construction of smart cities requires greater understanding of the latest sensing applications and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. IoT architectures integrate sensor networks and support processing and control loops on edge devices and in the cloud. Sensors are enabling the measurement of valuable information that provides the basis for making effective decisions and predicting future planning actions. IoT technologies provide the tools and platform for implementing sensing applications, including embedded systems, modern robotics, autonomous systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), mobile app development, 4G/5G mobile networks, cloud computing, virtual networking, and network security.

In this Special Issue, we focus on all major aspects of autonomous systems, sensing, and related IoT technology (e.g., robots, drones, cars, subsea vehicles). Robotics is currently going through a new revolution (e.g., Industry 4.0), with robots evolving into fully automated systems with high flexibility using artificial intelligence technology. This Special Issue aims to present high-quality research and recent technology advances toward smart cities in major application areas such as smart buildings, environment, intelligent transport, utilities, and health. Relevant topics of interest include all aspects of IoT systems in the city domain, including embedded sensors, wide area networks (e.g., LORA/5G), sensor networks, and wireless networks.

As localization represents the main backbone of several wireless sensor networks applications, several localization algorithms have been proposed in the literature. There is a growing interest in the multi-hop localization algorithms as they permit the localization of sensor nodes even if they are several hops away from anchor nodes. One of the most famous localization algorithms is the Distance Vector Hop (DV-Hop). Aiming to minimize the large localization error in the original DV-Hop algorithm, we propose an improved DV-Hop algorithm in this paper. The distance between unknown nodes and anchors is estimated using the received signal strength indication (RSSI) and the polynomial approximation. Moreover, the proposed algorithm uses a recursive computation of the localization process to improve the accuracy of position estimation. Experimental results show that the proposed localization technique minimizes the localization error and improves the localization accuracy. Full article
