This Special Issue offers the opportunity to researchers and academics to present articles related to the management and handling of places of natural and cultural interest with the aim of achieving an adequate tourist sustainability of these spaces.
In this regard, the UNWTO in its Global Code of Ethics for Tourism calls on the tourism sector to work closely with other community stakeholders in the protection and preservation of natural and cultural heritage resources with a view to ensuring a sustainable future for both resources and tourism.
In order for tourism to be characterized as sustainable, the following premises are essential: Firstly, making optimal use of environmental resources, as they are a fundamental element of tourism development, maintaining essential ecological processes, and helping to conserve natural resources and biological diversity; secondly, respecting the sociocultural authenticity of the host communities, preserving their architectural and living cultural heritage and their traditional values, and contributing to understanding and tolerance between cultures; and finally, ensuring long-term viable economic activities that bring well-distributed sociocultural benefits to all actors, including stable employment and income-earning opportunities and social services for host communities, and contributing to poverty reduction.
