Systems Engineering for Advanced Transport Systems – Solutions for Changes in Transport Demand Caused by Remote and Virtual Activities

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to announce the launch of a new Special Issue of Sustainability on the topic of “Systems Engineering for Advanced Transport Systems—Solutions for Changes in Transport Demand Caused by Remote and Virtual Activities”.

The main topic of this Special Issue is the application of systems engineering in transport, where significant changes are currently taking place in the structure of transport demand. These changes are related to new remote and virtual activities (including work, study and education, as well as shopping and services, leisure, entertainment, and recreation), caused by restrictions in movement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The result of these changes is the current and upcoming changes in the balance of passenger and freight transport, including changes in the modal split—in the use of various systems of individual, collective and personalized transport. The topics mentioned are problems and challenges for which new, advanced transport systems are being investigated. At the same time, the currently functioning transport systems require changes, modifications, and adjustments, primarily in organizational and functional aspects.

We invite all theoretician scientists and practitioners to submit their articles in order to share their knowledge in this area on the pages of this Special Issue of Sustainability. Topics of interest include but are not limited to models and methods on:

• The functional design of physical and/or organizational actions on transportation systems;
• Concepts, planning, design, management, maintenance, and retirement of transport means and transport infrastructure;
• Advanced intelligent transportation systems—cooperative, connected, and automated mobility—individual, common and sharing modes of transport;
• Advanced technology in transportation—human drive vehicles, autonomous vehicles, connected vehicles, with use of conventional, hybrid, and electric drive systems;
• Big data as a digital environment of transportation—various communication systems and innovative new mobility services;
• Planning and evaluation of advanced transportation system projects;
• Deep learning, machine learning, artificial intelligence in transportation systems and applications.

Manuscripts that emphasize either method development or applications are encouraged. Both original papers and review articles are welcome; authors interested in submitting a review article are encouraged to contact the editor in advance to discuss the scope.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
