Agroforestry as a Way of Sustainable Land Use

Dear Colleagues,

Agroforestry is the integrated combination of woody perennials with a low layer agricultural production. It is a traditional form of land use, but also includes new forms of agricultural and forestry use.

The agroforestry impact contribution to sustainability can be evaluated from technical perspectives (agronomy and forestry) but also from environmental sciences, and from a social and human perspectives.

Some topics relating agroforestry and sustainability are described below from a technical, environmental and social point of view:

Technical

• Agroforestry contribution to sustainable patterns of production and consumption.
• Agroforestry to Combat Desertification and Drought.
• Agroforestry and urbanization. Homegardens.
• Agroforestry as a sustainable disaster management.

Environmental

• Agroforestry as a global idea based in local sustainable and stable practices.
• Agroforestry, Air pollution and climate change.
• Agroforestry to improvement of Water pollution and sanitation.

Social

• Agroforestry against Misuse of land.
• Agroforestry as a tradition, racial and national identity, culture, ethical standards, family solidarity, particularly during immigration or large scale foreign cultural influence, and its impact on cultural or social sustainability.
• Agroforestry in national policies and international treaties for sustainable development.
• Ethical and philosophical aspects of agroforestry related to sustainable development.
• Education and awareness of agroforestry as a sustainability tool.

The special issue will be annonced through the social media of AFINET (1500 actors across Europe), the GACSA (Global alliance of Climate Smart Agriculture), the AFTA (Agroforestry Temperate Association), EURAF (European Agroforestry association) and the GRA (Global Research Alliance) with access to over 1000 researchers.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
