Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue of Sustainability will include a set of 'bibliometric reviews of research' on how sustainability has been, and is being, studied in different sub-disciplines comprising the field of organizational management and leadership. While global interest in how management processes impact sustainability in organizations has grown over the past two decades, there have been relatively few efforts to systematically examine the topical and methodological trends that create the emerging intellectual structure of this field. This Special Issue is devoted to a set of comparably structured 'bibliometric reviews of research, focusing on 10 management domains: Leadership, strategic management, innovation management, entrepreneurship, marketing management, financial management, human resource management, supply chain management, tourism and hospitality management, wellness and health care management. The reviews will employ bibliometric and scientometric methods that will highlight 1) the scope of research, 2) topical trends, and 3) how sustainability is being studied, and how these features form into the intellectual structure of each domain.

Note that this is not being proposed as a Special Issue open to outside submissions. Instead, the authors and papers have already been designated. The submission date for the Special Issue for reviews is March, 2019. Development of papers is being organized under a grant from the Thailand Sustainable Development Foundation through the Center for Research on Sustainable Leadership at the College of Management, Mahidol University.

Science Mapping of Tourist Mobility 1980–2019. Technological Advancements in the Collection of the Data for Tourist Traceability

Abstract

The tracking of tourist movements is an essential aspect in the management of sustainable tourist destinations. The current information and communication technologies provide innovative ways of collecting data on tourist movements, but it is still necessary to evaluate tools and methods of study for this challenge. At this point, mobile technologies are the best candidate for this task. Given the relevance of the topic, this paper proposes a mapping science analysis of publications on “movement of tourists” and “traceability.” It has been carried out in the two main sources WOS and SCOPUS. The term “traceability” is brought from industry and technology areas to be applied to the tourist movement/mobility tracking and management. The methodological scheme is based on a selection of search criteria with combinations of terms. The sources of specialized information in applied social sciences and technology were then selected. From there, the searches have been executed for their subsequent analysis in three stages—(I) relevance analysis filtering the results to obtain the most pertinent; (II) analysis of articles with similarity thematic, authors, journals or citations; (III) analysis of selected papers as input for the mapping analysis using Citespace. The automatic naming of clusters under the selected processing confirms that the analysis of movements is a valid scientific trend but research-oriented from the perspective of traceability is non-existent, so this approach is novel and complementary to existing ones and a potential contribution to knowledge about tourist movements. Finally, a set of methodological considerations and a classification of information capture tools are proposed. In this classification, mobile technology is the best option to enable tourist movement analysis. Full article

A Bibliometric Review of the Knowledge Base for Innovation in Sustainable Development

Abstract

This review explores the rising research field of sustainable development in combination with innovation. The basis to reach sustainable development is innovation, which plays a role on all dimensions, be it economically, socially, or environmentally. In this review, science mapping techniques were employed in order to asses 1690 journal articles extracted from the SCOPUS database concerned with innovation in sustainable development (ISD). The main objective of the review is to reveal the size, growth trajectory, and geographic distribution of the ISD literature. Furthermore, the aim is to assess the key publishing journals, authors, and documents as well as to uncover the intellectual structure and topical foci of the research domain. The review acknowledges a reasonable body of knowledge spanning nearly three decades. A result of this review is that the sustainable development literature emerged from the environmental research field and that the topical foci of the domain is closely aligned with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. This review is a first attempt to systematically analyze the literature on innovation in sustainable development (ISD) by applying science mapping techniques such as bibliometric analysis. It shall give guidance for future research and demonstrate the practical implications. Full article

Bibliometric Review of Research on Knowledge Management and Sustainability, 1994–2018

Abstract

Even though Knowledge Management (KM) is already widely used in business and public sector organisations, it also has potentially important implications when applied to the concept of sustainability. This research review aimed to examine the topography of research on KM and Sustainability. A total of 3025 articles from 1994 to 2018 were selected and analysed using bibliometric analysis to identify the growth trajectory of this literature, identify influential researchers and documents, explore the intellectual structure of the knowledge base and identify topical trends. The review found a knowledge of moderate but rapidly growing size. Key authors and documents were identified who can serve as guiding references for scholars entering this field of sustainability studies. Author co-citation analysis yielded a network map visualising the intellectual structure of this knowledge base which consisted of four Schools of Thought: Knowledge Management for Sustainability, Socio-Ecological System, Sustainability Science, KM for Sustainability Application. Keyword analysis highlighted climate change, learning, communities of practice and socio-economic management as topical trends emerging in the research front of this knowledge base. As the first bibliometric review of the KM and Sustainability literature, the findings from this paper establish a baseline for scholarship in this field which can be as a benchmark as the field continues to evolve in the future. Science Mapping the Knowledge Base on Sustainable Human Resource Management, 1982–2019

Abstract

The increasing interest in sustainability has led to the emergence of a new research focus in the field of human resource management (HRM). HRM scholars have recently begun to explore how HRM might contribute to sustainable outcomes and coined the term ‘sustainable human resource management’(S-HRM). In this bibliometric review, science mapping tools were used to examine 475 Scopus-indexed documents on S-HRM. The objectives of the review were to analyze the size, evolution, and regional distribution of this knowledge base, identify key journals, documents, as well as authors, examine the intellectual structure of this literature, and highlight topical trends. The review revealed a knowledge base that is still in the emergent phase, with a global scope but a concentration in Western developed societies. Four Schools of Thought emerged within this field. This review hopes to guide a new generation of S-HRM scholars by providing an overview of the current status of the knowledge base. Full article

Science Mapping of the Global Knowledge Base on Microfinance: Influential Authors and Documents, 1989–2019

Abstract

The use of microfinance in poverty alleviation and, by extension, as an instrument for sustainable social and economic development, represents a novel idea in sustainable finance. This study employed science mapping to examine 4049 Scopus-indexed documents explicitly concerned with microfinance. The goals of the review were to document the distribution of microfinance literature by type, volume, time, and geography, and to identify influential authors, articles, and a potential intellectual structure of this knowledge base. The first microfinance research was conducted in 1989, but the field attracted increased attention only after 2006, when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to microfinance pioneer Muhammad Yunus. This study does not find any single dominant school of thought in the field of microfinance, but rather identified three thematic research clusters: (1) a concentration on institutional aspects of microfinance, (2) scholars who used sophisticated research methods to evaluate the impact of microfinance, and (3) groundbreaking microfinance literature related to social justice more generally. As the first-ever, comprehensive bibliometric review of research on microfinance, this study provides benchmarks against which to assess the future evolution of this literature, a reference for scholars entering this domain, and targets for future development of this field of sustainability scholarship. Abstract

Robust literature on sustainable tourism development has emerged globally both in economically developed and emerging economies. Over the past several decades, policymakers and business practitioners increasingly acknowledge that the long-term development and sustainability of tourism destinations require clear guidelines and direction. The impetus for sustainable tourism development has become ever more urgent as a result of dual trends of climate change and massification of the global tourism industry. The current research review used science mapping techniques to examine 1596 Scopus-indexed documents published on sustainable tourism development. The objectives of the review were to document the size, growth, and global distribution of this literature, identify its key journals, authors, and documents, highlight emerging topics, and illuminate the underlying intellectual structure of this literature. The review also provides guidelines for scholars to develop research that can aid in future sustainable tourism development. Full article

Science Mapping of the Knowledge Base on Sustainable Entrepreneurship, 1996–2019

Abstract

After the launch of the United Nations’ Brundtland’s report in 1987, entrepreneurship has been promoted as one of the tools for achieving sustainable development. Since then, the studies in sustainable entrepreneurship have flourished and this topic has emerged as a subfield of entrepreneurship research. In order to examine the current stage of sustainable entrepreneurship (SE) research, this review utilized science mapping tools to analyze 712 Scopus-indexed documents written on the topic of sustainable entrepreneurship. This review assesses the size, publication evolution, and worldwide dispersion of research publications of this knowledge base as well as topics that have gained increased interest over the past few years. The review documented an emerging knowledge base, concentrated in Western developed societies. Sustainable entrepreneurship has evolved from earlier incarnations such as ecopreneurship and social entrepreneurship. Author co-citation analysis, three Schools of Thoughts (or three sub-themes) were identified in this knowledge base, namely Sustainable Entrepreneurship, Social Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability Innovation. This review aspires to provide a baseline bibliometric analysis of sustainable entrepreneurship research that both charts the evolution of this knowledge base and points towards productive lines of future inquiry. A Bibliometric Review of Global Research on Corporate Governance and Board Attributes

Abstract

This paper conducts a bibliometric review of global research on the role of boards of directors in corporate governance. Boards of directors play a crucial role in the corporate governance of publicly traded firms, as they monitor the performance of top executives on behalf of shareholders and help to set the firm’s overall strategic direction. Our review documents most influential articles, authors, and journals in this area. The bibliometric analysis highlights the multi-disciplinary nature of research on boards of directors, covering the fields of finance and economics, accounting and auditing, and management and strategy. Furthermore, co-citation analyses reveal the core theoretical and conceptual articles on agency theory and ownership structure that provide the foundation for research on corporate governance and boards of directors. The review shows that, despite its practical importance, studies on how boards of directors contribute to corporate sustainability represent only a small fraction of the articles in this literature. This highlights the need for more research on this particular topic in the coming years. Moreover, the keyword co-occurrence analysis suggests other emerging research topics in the BDCG knowledge base are in the areas of gender diversity, CSR, and innovation, which pinpoints possible future research directions for scholars in the field. Abstract

The aims of this paper are (i) to identify which documents are the most influential when analyzing socially responsible funds, and (ii) to identify the conceptual structure of the field of research through co-word analysis. To achieve the proposed objectives, the VOS Viewer and two databases, Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus, were used for the period 1988–2018, and a total of 209 research papers were analyzed. This analysis provides an insight into the nature and trends of research on socially responsible investment (SRI) funds. Full article

Abstract

The rise of sustainable development as a field of applied research has been observed across a wide range of disciplines. Successful change towards sustainability in organizations and societies requires leadership to provide a vision, set direction, and motivate people to move towards new goals. Thus, sustainable leadership is emerging as a new domain of study within the field of management. This review of research employed science mapping tools to examine 952 Scopus-indexed documents explicitly concerned with sustainable leadership. The goals of the review were to document the size, growth trajectory, and geographic distribution of this literature, identify key journals, authors, and documents, analyze the intellectual structure of this knowledge base, and highlight emerging topics. The review documented a modest-sized knowledge base of recent vintage, concentrated in Western developed societies but global in scope. Six Schools of Thought were identified within this knowledge base, one of which—Sustainable Leadership—was singled out for attention. As the first bibliometric review of research on sustainable leadership, this review provides a reference for scholars entering this domain, as well as guidance with respect to high value frameworks, foci for future research, and practical implications.
