Dear Colleagues,

The concept of innovation is no longer closely connected with the production process. By contrast, at present, innovations affect and are closely linked to all areas of society. Their interconnection has been very important in the concept of sustainable development, as economic growth has begun to be curbed by the limits of the natural environment, growing climate change, and environmental problems. Because of the deterioration of the environment, the environmental agenda has now become an important issue and part of innovation strategies. Within the conflict among economic progress and limited natural resources and environmental problems and threats, innovation has become a hot topic and a key driver of sustainable development. In this case, innovation can harmonize economic growth and the limits of natural resources. This link between economic and environmental performance represents environmental improvements as a tool for competitiveness in the form of eco-innovation. In this sense, innovation represents an opportunity to achieve sustainability in terms of efficient use of natural resources, elimination of environmental impacts, and environmental shock and market pressure, without slowing down overall economic growth. In other words, this relationship can lead to mutual benefits, while environmental constraints are transformed into sustainable opportunities through eco-innovation.

This Special Edition accepts studies that consider the environmental, social, and economic aspects of innovation and its development at different levels, from the perspective of products, processes, companies, sectors, supply chains, regions, or economies. In this context, studies on eco-innovation are acceptable as a positive change aimed at making significant or visible progress toward sustainable development by reducing environmental impacts or achieving a more efficient and responsible use of natural resources. It will also be open to studies dealing with eco-innovation focused on the re-use of natural resources according to the principle of the circular economy, as well as other related arguments in the form of specialized and interdisciplinary manuscripts.

In the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Chinese government first proposed the goal of carbon neutrality and carbon peaking. Since then, China’s economy and society have undergone a comprehensive green and sustainable development upgrade and transformation. The development of green finance can provide financial support for the achievement of the dual carbon goals and mitigate the impact of climate change, and more importantly can contribute to the sustainable development of the national economy and society. In this study, we innovatively draw on the quality function deployment theory in marketing to logically formulate the research idea of this paper. The greatest advantage of this approach is that it enhances the readability of this paper and enriches the research logic system of this paper. On this basis, we also applied the G1-entropy value method from fuzzy mathematical theory for quantitative research. In fact, it should be noted that the G1 method we propose in this study is actually an improved subjective assessment method, in which we introduce expert ratings to improve the reliability of the subjective assessment results. As we all know, financial system architecture and research is a common academic topic, but unlike the classical research on the development quality of financial systems, we innovatively addressed the actual national conditions in China and fully integrated green elements in the construction of the index system from the perspective of green finance and sustainability. Finally, we calculated the index weights through G1-entropy quantification, and qualitatively propose countermeasures for the development quality of China’s green finance for key index factors. In conclusion, we sort the contributions of this paper into the following three aspects: (1) we innovatively combined the quality function deployment theory and built the quantitative analysis process architecture in this paper, which enhanced the readability of this paper; (2) we realized the use of quantitative research for qualitative analysis and proposed the G1-entropy value method, which made up for the defects of the subjective and objective methods in the traditional evaluation methods; and (3) we realized the organic combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis, and proposed relevant countermeasure suggestions based on the quantitative index calculation results, which provided relevant countermeasure suggestions for promoting the sustainable and high-quality development of green finance in China. Background: Systematic management of innovation in the context of sustainable development based on ecological innovation is an essential part of the global market. Therefore, it will be guided by ecological innovations, which represent a means of sustainable development. The traditional approach to the evaluation of innovations focused mainly on economic results and failed to capture the ecological dimensions of sustainability from the theme of view of their consumers’ application. Therefore, the paper has the aim of evaluating the sustainability of ecological innovations from the perspective of customers in Slovakia, focusing on the elementary characteristics of sustainability through ecological innovations from the point of view of consumers. In the research, we focus on the parameters of ecological innovations connected with the sustainability of buildings and their operation—energy, health, comfort, materials, living processes and the quality of the place and equipment from the point of view of mobility. Methods: The primary study method is the Kano model. Conclusions: The results point to the fact that Slovak respondents are largely unaffected by ecological innovations, but they perceive the use of cars with an internal combustion engine as a mandatory requirement; innovations in thermal insulation, the use of natural and renewable materials and mass transport are attractive requirements for the respondents. Heating and use of recyclable materials are one-dimensional requirements. Full article

Eco-innovation is the main driver of realizing the coordinated development of resource, environmental and economic systems. This paper measures regional eco-innovation efficiency (EIE) by using the Super-Slack Based Measure (SBM) model with undesirable outputs and distinguishes different agglomeration patterns based on Chinese data of 21 manufacturing sub-industries of 30 provinces. In particular, from the perspective of the dynamic evolution of manufacturing agglomeration, the nonlinear effects of specialized and diversified agglomeration on EIE are investigated based on panel threshold regression models. The results indicate that China’s EIE shows a U-shaped changing trend. The impacts of specialized and diversified agglomeration on EIE are nonlinear and have significant three-threshold effects. There exist a U-shaped relationship between specialized agglomeration and EIE, and an S-shaped relationship between diversified agglomeration and EIE. In terms of eco-innovation, the development of diversified agglomeration is superior to that of specialized agglomeration. Overall, there is still much room for more than 70% of provinces in China to increase their EIE by optimizing the layout of manufacturing specialized and diversified agglomeration. To improve the EIE and achieve sustainable economic growth, differentiated agglomeration policies should be formulated in various stages and regions. In addition, the driving mechanism of eco-innovation should be strengthened. Full article
