Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable energy management is a guideline for the development energy strategy. It implies a need for the future paradigm defined and interpreted as intergenerational phenomena as the level scale, multiple domains, social development of society and multiple interpretation of sustainable development. The energy as a complex system requires a multi-criteria evaluation of the potential options to meet the future of its development. It requires respective set of indicators reflecting economic, environmental, social and technological quality. With the multi-criteria assessment of potential options and the evaluation of strategic road map is designed.

Fossil, nuclear and renewable energy resources management are the essential bases for the long term planning for the future resources consumption. Energy sustainable management is the essential tool for the proper utilization of the energy resources.

The economic evaluation of energy resource conversion into a final energy represents motivation for the new technological development. In this respect a new development of energy system will stimulate respective economic and technological development. Special attention has to be devoted to the development of renewable energy resource.

The social aspect of energy system comprises the need for respective satisfaction of human requirements. It implies requirement for the multi-purpose energy system to be used for the heating and cooling systems, energy and water production, energy use in transport systems.

The Sustainable Energy Management issue of Sustainable journal is aimed to promote and invite interested experts in deferent area to write peer-revenue articles, original paper and present original idea for promotion of the new energy strategy.

The concept of “sustainable development” implies that the environmental externalities unavoidably generated by human activities be reduced to a minimum: In fact, the very definition of “sustainability” leads—as it will be briefly discussed in the paper—to a physically measurable upper limit for untreated discharges. Since the current state of affairs on Earth is far from being sustainable, any proposal for a future scenario that is not substantiated by an accurate assessment of the effects of the environmental externalities is devoid of real sense and ought not to be pursued. The present paper illustrates the application of Extended Exergy Accounting (EEA) to the quantification of such externalities. The exergy flow diagrams of EEA include non-material and non-energetic production factors like labor, and capital and environmental remediation costs, providing a quantitative measure of the amount of primary resources that are cumulatively used in the production of a good or service, and it is shown to provide a wealth of quantitative information to energy managers and planners. Since the 1980s sustainability has clearly become the challenge of the 21st century. In a process toward a sustainable society it is crucial that different stakeholders start collaboration and exchange ideas with technicians and academics. To finalize the policy decisions on important issues such as energy sustainability, collaboration between policy makers, academia and the private sector is important. This work intends to give Italian policy makers concrete advice and solutions to develop energy systems for mobility. The analysis proceeds from the context of Sustainability Science, a new science, which has emerged as one of the most important disciplines of international scientific research. Using a new approach, trans-disciplinary and integrated, this research is oriented to study and understand the complexity of the interactions between economy, society and nature. This broad approach permits proposing concrete solutions to complex problems locally and globally. We propose a scheme of definition of Sustainability Energy, defining five pillars of reference, and we redefine the energy systems for mobility in the context of Sustainability Science. In this paper, we start from the idea that we are living in a crucial passage, we are moving from the era of petroleum to the era of energy vectors. Energy systems, including mobility, should be redefined within this new approach. Full article

The promotion of sustainable development is the European affirmation in the international arena and is European policy for the Union. However, the current situation—where the Sustainability is more intention than a practice—risks such European affirmation. In our analysis, we have assumed that the energy system is a complex system, which may interact with its surrounding by utilizing resources, exchange conversion system products, utilizing economic benefits from conversion processes and absorbing the social consequences of conversion processes. Information and communication technologies are recognized as one of the pillars in the development of sustainable global life support systems. Information and communication technologies improve the capability to monitor and manage energy systems and to help to reduce the impact of natural and human-induced disasters through prediction, early warning and registration of potential changes which may lead to the unexpected disasters. With the respective methodology and monitoring system, the resilience of an energy system can be evaluated as the safety parameter of the energy system. In this respect, it is of the paramount importance to introduce the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in the online evaluation of an energy system. The main attention of this paper is devoted to: (1) Energy efficiency as a complex problem, which has to be defined with an additive function of agglomerated economic efficiency, environment efficiency and social efficiency; (2) Information and communication technologies recognized as the tool for the development of sustainable and safe global life support systems. This comprises monitoring tools for the assessment and evaluation of potential degradation and resilience of the energy system; (3) Multi-criteria evaluation method is verified as an appropriate procedure for the Sustainability Index determination.
