Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Growing energy demand and environmental concerns have driven the exploitation of renewable energy. Biomass as an abundant renewable resource has been extensively investigated for energy conversion and biofuel generation. Besides the carbon emissions, biomass processing can also exert other impacts on the environment and human health due to the contaminants (e.g., heavy metals) and the precursors (e.g., heteroatoms of S and N) contained within biomass, as well as the processing approaches and conditions (e.g., particulate matter (PM) from biomass combustion). During the commercialization of biomass thermochemical processing, the relevant environmental issues are gaining increasing attention from researchers. This Special Issue aims to explore the latest research efforts in the environmental aspects of biomass thermochemical processes. Original research articles, short communications, review articles, and perspectives in this research field are welcome for submission. The research topics include but are not limited to the following areas with respect to biomass thermochemical processing:

  • Pollutants (e.g., SOx and PM) emitted from biomass processing activities and their control/abatement;
  • Pollutants transformation and formation mechanisms;
  • Processing of contaminated biomass (e.g., sewage sludge and heavy-metal-bearing plants from phytoremediation);
  • Integration of different processes or multi-disciplinary collaboration for better environmental performance;
  • Environmental assessment such as life cycle assessment (LCA) and risk assessment (e.g., human health and ecological risk analysis/evaluation);
  • Carbon footprint and CO2 capture/sequestration;
  • Environmental policy.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
