Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As a discipline with a profound interdisciplinary character, studying the complex interactions between the nature and the society, Geography can bring an important contribution to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. It can offer a local to a global perspective of a variety of topics covered by the SDGs, as for example:

  • SDG1 (No poverty): geographical studies on poverty, vulnerable communities, exposure and vulnerability of poor communities to climate-related hazards, regional disparities studies
  • SDG2 (Zero hunger): geographical studies on agricultural productivity, sustainable food production systems, examples of community implementing resilient agricultural practices, land and soil degradation, agricultural ecosystems assessment
  • SDG3 (Good health and well-being): spatial studies using health and well-being indicators, geographical studies on the transfer of hazardous chemicals posing risk to human health in the environment
  • SDG4 (Quality education): the role of geographical education on ensuring the sustainability literacy of the young generation, how can Geography provide the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, the climate change and sustainability education and training of Geography teachers
  • SDG6 (Clean Water & sanitation): water quality studies, environmental awareness of people in terms of safe use of water, actions to protect the water, integrated water resources management, evaluation of water-related ecosystems in different geographical areas
  • SDG7 (Clean Energy): spatial distribution of renewable energy sources in different geographical areas
  • SDG11 (Sustainable cities & communities): studies on the urbanization patterns, settlements planning and management, cultural and natural heritage assessment, disaster risk assessment, environmental impacts of cities, regional development studies outlining the link between urban, periurban and rural areas
  • SDG12 (Sustainable production and consumption): sustainable management and effective use of natural management, waste management, education of people in terms of information and awareness regarding sustainable development and lifestyle in harmony with nature
  • SDG13 (Climate): geographical studies on resilience and adaptive capacity to climate change, climate-related hazards and natural disasters, education and awareness in terms of climate change adaptation and mitigation
  • SDG14 (Life below water): the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems and marine pollution, sustainable management of coastal ecosystems, marine conservation, sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism
  • SDG15 (Life on land): studies related to restoration, conservation and sustainable use of freshwater ecosystems, the assessment of ecosystems services, land degradation, deforestation, drought and floods assessment, biodiversity studies, the impact of invasive alien species on land and water ecosystems.
  • SDG17 (Partnerships for the goal): regional and international cooperation in Geography for promoting sustainability principles, with a particular interest in the activities developed by the International Geographical Union, the participation of geographers in global partnerships for sustainable development, initiatives of data sharing and monitoring

In this respect, the Special Issue is focused on innovative sustainability-oriented geographical research on the topics covered by SDGs exemplified above, that explore the diverse social, environmental, economic and cultural contexts at various spatial scales. Moreover, it welcomes papers that report on geographical education initiatives in schools and universities, the implication of geographers in community-based learning and increasing community’s awareness in terms of environment, climate change and sustainable development. In addition, papers that make use of geospatial technologies (e.g. remote sensing, GIS), both in geographical research and education for sustainable development are particularly relevant for the Special Issue.

This Special Issue “The contribution of Geography in supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” aims to disseminate and support the efforts of geographers worldwide to promote the implementation of the SDGs.
