Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Currently, environmental pollution is the most alarming problem around the world. Many researchers and world leaders have identified the current generation as the one with the power to significantly modulate the bearing of this enduring issue. This might be achieved through the complementary application of green chemistry and establishment of biorefineries. Biorefineries are being increasingly employed for the generation of economic commodities, including pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, biofuels, and biopolymers, which could otherwise be highly expensive. Implementation of green chemistry in all industries including agriculture, food and feed, chemicals, fuels, and other consumables can further limit the discharge of wastes and byproducts, since the beginning of the production processes. Furthermore, the establishment of integrated biorefineries for waste valorization sourced from different sectors can simultaneously reduce the pollution and support micro and macroeconomies.

This Special Issue welcomes researchers, academicians, R&D scientists, and industrial representatives to contribute original review articles, research articles, and short communications focused on the latest developments in different aspects of green chemistry (including the 12 principles established by Anastas and Warner (1998)) applications and biorefineries. Reviews should be critical and prepared with their main focus on the studies conducted in the last fifteen years. Authors are highly encouraged to provide the economical and energy aspects of the techniques along with the advancement of the processes. Studies on novel concepts, products such as nutraceuticals, biopolymers, biofuels, and their sustainable applications will also be encouraged. Integrated biorefineries concepts and applications for valorization of different wastes will be welcomed. Applications can include soil and water remediation, sustainable agricultural practices along with food, feed, and nutraceutical and pharmaceutical production, among others. Manuscripts focused on challenges against establishment and administration of sustainable biorefineries will also be considered.

The articles must be original contributions and should significantly reflect advancement in this area along with focus on the scope of this Special issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
