Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nautical tourism (NT) has become a consolidated segment of tourism with a large potential for development, which raises questions about its sustainability. This Special Issue focuses on the sustainability of NT in terms of its contribution to socioeconomic development, while maintaining a balance with environmental and ecological factors. Topics concerned with the analysis of consumer decision making, operators, and destination management are welcome. The Issue will provide a deep understanding of the different aspects that challenge the sustainability of NT for operators and organizations.

The future sustainable development of NT partly depends on understanding the relationships between the activity and the natural environment. There is a need to establish uniform criteria for delimitating and analyzing the impacts of the sector from both supply and demand perspectives. Further insight into the policies and measures dealing with uncertainty about the sustainable outcomes of the NT resulting from the interactions between tourists and the environment are also welcome. Trans-disciplinary methods might be useful in order to analyze the complex interrelationships between nautical tourists and operators and the natural environments, providing information for integrated policy formulation.

This Special Issue titled “Sustainability in Nautical Tourism” welcomes contributions from researchers on these suggested topics:

  • sustainable consumer behavior
  • environmental and social responsibility (supply/demand side)
  • sustainable products and services
  • environmental impacts and evaluation
  • technological innovation and research
  • reconciling tourists with marine environments
  • uncertainty and decision making
  • trans-disciplinary methods of analysis
