Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The adoption of solar energy is a key element for supporting cities, neighbourhoods and streets moving towards low carbon energy. However, solar urban planning depends upon multiple factors and variables, making urban environments challenged sites for solar power generation due to the complexity of urban forms and shadowing effects produced by distinct morphologies. State of the art methodologies traditionally either focus on the city surface in general or in rooftops in particular. Consequently, novel Photovoltaic-based urban solutions to be installed in the public space, that have distinct requirements than rooftop PV systems, are not usually considered. So, new approaches, methods and tools to assess solar capture in public spaces are required for the assessment of local solar potential considering other urban surfaces than rooftops. These can include highway noise barriers, façades, urban furniture, carports, pedestrian paving, digital kiosks, cycle paths or road surfaces, among others. The power generated could then be used for public illumination and/or vehicle and mobile device charging.

This special issue intends to present original and multi-disciplinary approaches for evaluating the solar potential of the urban environment. Authors are challenged to explore how the public spaces could contribute to power generation through solar systems built on outdoor surfaces. Contributions concerning the main challenges, social, economical and environmental barriers, opportunities and strategies for solar implementation in the urban context are also welcomed.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
