Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The international agri-food business has a major task to fulfill, namely, to produce and deliver food for a still-growing world population. This business represents a global agri-food trade value of about 1.5 trillion USD (FAO, 2020a) and operates in a world where an estimated 690 million people are hungry and with 25% of the world population facing moderate to severe food insecurity (FAO, 2020b). The task of producing and delivering food in this context is not without challenges such as natural resource exhaustion, global warming and international relations dynamics. This forces the international agri-food business to turn to circular global food chains, in which sustainability and innovation are key. Despite a growing body of research on sustainability and innovation in general, and in the international agri-food business, this Special Issue calls for new research into sustainability and innovation in the international agri-food business. This call invites research contributions on topics such as, but not limited to:

  • Sustainable innovation in global food chains;
  • Sustainability and innovation in international agri-food business models;
  • Innovation in circular international agri-food companies;
  • Sustainability and innovation international agri-food development;
  • International agri-food SMEs and sustainability and innovation.
