Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainability has always been difficult to define and, as a result, it carries many different meanings for many different people—particularly in an industry sector as varied as the agrifood industry. Additionally, new and disruptive technologies are being introduced into the food production process, and the ways in which these will impact what is defined as, and what is regarded as, “sustainability in the agrifood industry” remain to be explored.

This Special Issue aims to address the question of “what Sustainability means and how it is measured” in relation to different components of agrifood chains and networks across all agrifood industry sectors that contribute to putting food—fresh or processed—onto customers’ plates.

The Special Issue aims to attract research articles answering questions such as “What does the word ‘sustainable’ really mean in the agrifood industry and for different components of an agrifood industry chain?”, “How can it be measured?”, and “What value does it create and to whom?”. Of particular interest are the questions “What is the social license to do business in the agrifood sector in relation to sustainability credentials?” and “Could disruptive technological developments currently in play in the agrifood industry change ideas around how sustainability is viewed?” Finally, we ask, “Are there differences between sustainable food chains in developed and developing countries?”
