Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue on “Eco-Sustainable Development and Circular Economy” represents a forum for experts such as management scientists, engineers, economists, social and political scientists, and industry experts to discuss, in a systematic way, the concepts of circular economy and eco-sustainable development, to bring a new and interdisciplinary approach to these two concepts. Focusing on reducing non-renewable resources and introducing innovative and eco-sustainable elements into the consumption phase makes the circular economy an important strategic model to address substantial environmental challenges, such as resource scarcity, global warming, and waste management, as well as economic, human. and technological changes. The focus of this Special Issue on “Eco-Sustainable Development and Circular Economy” aims to bring a new and interdisciplinary approach to these two concepts, circular economy and eco-sustainable development, by focusing on:

  • Circular economy of waste recycling essential “to close the loop”;
  • Circular product design;
  • Technology and production involving the extension of the life of the product;
  • Production and consumption development systems in which goods previously considered waste are reused as sustainable resources for new processes;
  • Social, economic, and technological change for eco-sustainable development;
  • Circular business models;
  • Eco-design according to circular economy principles during the life cycle;
  • Circular innovations;
  • Digitally enabled circular economy.

This issue aims to publish original articles, reviews, short communications, research notes, analyses, and case studies on topics relating to a circular economy and eco-sustainable development. We look forward to your valuable contribution in order to build together a successful issue that will share with readers state-of-the-art activities and future perspectives on the topic.

Rapid economic developments have led to the excessive consumption of environmental resources. Consumption patterns play a crucial role in deteriorating environmental conditions and influencing consumers to seek sustainability features while purchasing different products. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the sustainability factors that have prompted consumers in Malaysia to buy green products. The primary elements of this research focused on environmental concern, green product awareness, government support, perceived ecological value, community green practice, purchase intention, and green product purchase behavior. Additionally, to explain the relationship between the independent and dependent variables, this research employed the theory of planned behavior as a theoretical framework. A total of 300 questionnaires were collected and examined using smart PLS-SEM. The findings of the research suggest that all factors, including environmental concern, green product awareness, government support, perceived ecological value, community green practice, and purchase intention, influence consumers in Malaysia to purchase green products. Finally, this research discusses the contribution, limitations, and suggestions for future studies related to purchasing behavior towards green products. Full article

Green product design is a vital measure to support sustainable development in a circular economy era. This paper studies the multi-product pricing and green product design strategies under different supply chain structures and government subsidy strategies. Considering different channel leadership, we establish the centralized (C), manufacturer-led (MS), and retailer-led (RS) supply chain models, respectively. By applying a game-theoretical approach, corresponding equilibrium pricing, green product design, and government subsidy decisions under different supply chain structures are obtained. Through comparison and numerical analysis, we find that: (1) the different subsidy strategies of the government have an important impact on green product development. When the government provides a uniform subsidy strategy, a RS supply chain can bring greener product, more market demands, more profit, and more social welfare; (2) when the government provides a differentiated subsidy strategy, MS and RS supply chain structures can bring greener product and more market demand than the centralized supply chain. They can also bring the same social welfare and the same product to the green design level. However, the MS supply chain structure can bring more profit for the firm; (3) the consumers’ green awareness positively impacts the design and development of green product. Therefore, it is beneficial for the firm to adopt reasonable measures to boost the environmental awareness of consumers in order to realize the sustainable development of our society. Full article

Does the Green Industry Policy Reduce Industrial Pollution Emissions?—Evidence from China’s National Eco-Industrial Park

As a regional green industrial policy, the construction of national eco-industrial parks is of great significance to the realization of industrial green transformation, while its environmental effects and mechanisms have not yet been clarified. Using panel data from 308 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2017, this study takes the establishment of 3 national-level ecological industrial parks as a quasi-natural experiment, also using a time-varying difference in difference model to examine how green industrial policies affect industrial pollution emissions. The study found that the establishment of a national eco-industrial park has significantly reduced industrial sulfur dioxide emissions, and the emission reduction effect has a lag effect and long-term impact. In cities with strong environmental regulations, provincial capitals and municipalities, and cities with a high degree of marketization, eco-industrial parks have better emission reduction effects, while, in cities with greater economic growth incentives and fiscal pressures, eco-industrial parks are difficult to achieve emission reduction effects. The establishment of national eco-industrial parks can reduce industrial pollution emissions by improving pollution treatment efficiency and energy efficiency, as well as promoting industrial agglomeration. China should continue to promote the implementation of green industrial policies, to strengthen the construction of national-level eco-industrial parks at this stage. Full article
