Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The impacts of global environmental changes, including climate change, on humans and the ecosystem are emerging more frequently than expected. Climate change impacts such as floods (including glacial lake outburst floods), drought, heat and cold waves, and increased intensity and frequency of storms have exacerbated economic losses and reduced our resilience and that of ecosystems. Socioeconomic developments expedited by increasing population continue to increase vulnerability and disaster risks.

The natural ability of ecosystems and biodiversity to provide services that are essential for helping people to adapt to the impacts of climate change and disaster risks has led to the emergence of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA). Convention on biological diversity (CBD) has defined EbA as the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services to help people to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. EbA is quickly emerging as a popular form of improving social and ecological resilience and avert risks. It builds upon the ecosystem and biodiversity’s natural capacity to restore and conserve ecosystems. 

We welcome scholars to publish scientific studies that attempt to deepen our understanding of the human–nature interface, especially from an EbA perspective, which results in:

  1. Improving policy solutions for ecosystem-based adaptation to the impacts of climate change;
  2. Identifying innovative technological solutions for efficient management of eBA;
  3. Identifying social and environmental justice issues in climate change impacts and adaptation;
  4. Developing methods to test EbA to improve socioecological resilience, reduce disasters, etc.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
