Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainability is one of humanity’s greatest challenges, while digitalization is considered to be today’s preeminent driver of change. Digitalization offers fascinating opportunities for industry, but it also changes the products and services of tomorrow as well as the way they are developed. The interplay of disciplines such as electronics, computer science, and mechanical engineering is becoming more important than ever. Advanced systems engineering (ASE) encompasses the successful development of innovative products, services, and product–service systems as well as their creation processes. Here, ASE integrates the effects of digitalization, interdisciplinary work, and networking of systems. It aims to manage technical and organizational complexity, hence representing a new perspective for the (strategic) planning, development, and operation of intelligent technical systems using system-oriented and innovative approaches. Three pillars are the foundation of ASE: 1) advanced systems, which are characterized by a high degree of networking, autonomy, and interactive and sociotechnical integration, as well as coupling between product and service components; 2) systems engineering, which focuses on approaches for the interdisciplinary and holistic development of such systems; 3) advanced engineering, which takes the work organization in engineering into account and considers processes, methods, and tools against the background of digitalization, creativity, and agility.

The scope of this Special Issue includes papers that deliver insights into advanced systems engineering as a whole and papers outlining significant progress in one of the three subject areas. Papers may address all phases of the product lifecycle, e.g., strategic planning, development, and/or operation. The Special Issue should contribute to forming a holistic view on the engineering of a sustainable future.

Scholars and practitioners from all disciplines are invited to contribute to this issue. Submissions may include but are not limited to new research questions, novel concepts, innovative methodologies, as well as outstanding applications. The application of various research methods, such as systematic literature reviews, design science approaches or case studies, is also welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
