Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, society is betting on new business, tourism, and educational models that seek to achieve sustainability that meets the needs of the present without compromising the capacities of future generations, guaranteeing the balance between economic growth, caring for the environment, and social welfare. Not only does profitability matter, but the environment also begins to matter. In all this, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are playing and will play a leading role.

For this reason, this Special Issue requests novel papers in terms of analysis, solutions, and applications of ICT in the search for sustainability in business, tourism, and education, which allow evaluations and achieve the goals pursued with said sustainability. We hope to create a forum where researchers in the domain of information and communication technologies in business, in tourism, and in education can share their results, experiences, techniques, surveys, analyses, and debates on the application of technologies in achieving this purpose. The topics of interest for this Special Issue are not strictly limited to traditional ICT issues.

This research reflects on the environmental problems that we are currently experiencing as a society and discusses education as an opportunity to solve them. Several frameworks of university digital competencies are identified and environmental care is highlighted as an important part of them, so the objective is to know the perceptions of university students in Mexico on digital competency and environmental protection and verify the following hypothesis: “currently there a is little development of environmental awareness and the relationship between the use of Information Technology (IT) as well as its environmental impact among university students”. For this purpose, a quantitative, non-experimental approach was used, specifically, a descriptive cross-sectional design using a Likert-type questionnaire was applied on 22 and 23 November 2021 to 135 students from two public universities belonging to four undergraduate programs in Mexico. The results indicate that most students are aware that the use of electronic devices for educational purposes has an impact on the environment and that, therefore, it is necessary to adopt effective measures and habits for an adequate and optimal use of digital environments. Between two possible practices when supervising a remote synchronous evaluation, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of Spanish universities opted for the use of videoconferences with audio and active video, instead of implementing e-proctoring. Thus, in order to analyze the reasons for this non-implementation and take measures so that its use can be extended in the Spanish university system, this study focused on identifying the critical factors in the decision of Spanish universities to accept and implement e-proctoring as a method of remote supervision. For this, a causal study was carried out using the methodology of fuzzy cognitive maps, and the data obtained were processed through the FCMappers tool. This allowed a glimpse of the key role played by students in this non-implementation (who alleged the non-possibility of having the resources necessary for the use of e-proctoring and the violation of privacy that the use of this tool entailed) and highlighted the role of the “pressure or incentives from government” factor if these allegations are to be eliminated and if e-proctoring is to be implemented in Spanish universities.
