Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past 40 years, tourism has been an activity of capital importance and vital to national and local economies. In contrast to the mass tourism phenomenon (known as “overtourism”), many actors seek to encourage sustainable activity both from an economic and environmental perspective. Until the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism was seen mainly as an activity linked to relaxation and the period in which the associated risks were very low or nonexistent (for instance, baggage being stolen, missing a flight, or getting sick while on vacation). For the first time in history, the business world stopped and then restarted.

The digital adoption of technology allowing everyone to stay connected with friends, family and relatives is really a digital revolution. The Internet has allowed for the continuation of many jobs from home, and even classes. Social networks allow many companies to survive or even be reborn digitally. Right now, there is a need for companies to readjust to the digital reality. Therefore, organizations have to adapt their offerings to guarantee security and trust for their clients, taking into account the context and the risks arising from the pandemic.

For this Special Issue, we invite our colleagues to bring together a set of relevant research that reports and highlights practical and successful situations (or cases) in order to inform and teach managers and decision makers the good response practices that are being adopted worldwide in this new context. All types of approaches (interviews or surveys) are welcome for this Special Issue. We are looking for research works mainly in the following areas: marketing, tourism and management.

We seek to promote and to bring together works that can present new business models, new management practices, as how to reassure shop buyers or even how to receive a client for tourism in this new era. We are interested in research articles, conceptual articles, review articles, and commentaries covering the whole breadth of sustainability concerns linked to digital services. The focus of this Special Issue is on digital services by sharing and explaining digital tools, products, services, persons, and/or interactions. The scope and the purpose of the Special Issue are linked: to allow managers to learn how to digitally manage their businesses.

The article presents selected post-industrial heritage sites in Poland and the USA. Comparative studies conducted by the authors concern economic, financial and socio-cultural aspects. The research methods used include a diagnostic survey and analysis of financial documents of selected post-industrial facilities in Poland and the USA. The authors carried out financial analyses of the functioning of selected post-industrial cultural heritage facilities. The aims of the diagnostic survey were to examine public opinion regarding the financing of post-industrial facilities and the interest of young people in post-industrial monuments. Furthermore, the researchers aimed to identify potential customers and determine the most effective methods of promoting post-industrial cultural objects and post-industrial tourism. These research results can be used by authorities managing post-industrial cultural monuments as a guideline for designing marketing activities and segmenting the market for post-industrial tourism services. This will allow marketing information to reach defined target groups more effectively. Surveys showed that respondents from both countries agreed about the need to protect post-industrial heritage. Significant differences in opinions concerned interest in post-industrial tourist offerings. In Poland, 88% of respondents believed that post-industrial facilities can arouse the interest of tourists, whereas only 28% of respondents believed so in the USA. This article considers the development of post-industrial tourism and the revitalization of post-industrial facilities from the new perspective of potential users. Full article

Sustainability is one of the current much-discussed issues in the world, including in tourism sectors. However, there are few studies on tourism management and marketing toward sustainable tourism. This study aims to analyze the literature on tourism management and marketing toward sustainable tourism by using a bibliometric analysis approach based on the Web of Science (WOS) database. A sample of 528 articles was analyzed in this study. The data were processed and the results were graphically presented by using the R program. The results found the occurrence of publications by year, publication source information and authors, journals, countries, institutions, thematic maps, and current trends of topics in tourism management and marketing toward sustainable tourism. Furthermore, the role of tourism management and marketing toward sustainable tourism were discussed in this study. The bibliometric analysis helps to identify a future research agenda in sustainable tourism. Full article
