Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Water is an essential resource for all life on Earth. The management and allocation of water resources is critical to all societies. It is being challenged by rapid population growth, urbanization, and climate change. Water has multiple dimensions (technical, social, political, economic), which when not addressed could be sources of conflict. The foremost issue of water governance is the protection of supply, and proper access for all. Inequitable use of water—for example, in regions of scarcity, drought, natural disaster, pollution, or social/political turmoil—is one of the foremost causes of conflict throughout the world. Despite this, collaboration around water is much more common than conflict. Proper water management requires all stakeholders to seek consensus on the need for equity and ethics regarding water sustainability. The focus of this Special Issue is on promoting water security and global peace development through equitable policy, governance, and technology.

We seek contributions that highlight approaches for managing water conflict and promoting peace through effective management policies, governance, innovation, and technology. Case studies that highlight successful implementations of water collaboration are encouraged. For example, what guiding principles ensure the peaceful allocation of transboundary water resources such that consideration of the costs and consequences of water use include cultural issues, climate change, and other natural or social stressors? What scientific developments can help us understand long-term water dynamics such as climate change and land use change, and their interrelatedness to other dynamics such as population migration, energy technology, greening the economy, and food production? How are governance, data, or technology used to manage, mitigate, or prepare for conflict around water in consideration of inclusion, transparency, and cultural differences? We seek to highlight peaceful approaches to water stress that promote global peace and sustainable development. The purpose of this Special Issue is to identify peace norms and the water–peace dynamic that promote the long-term security of water resources in different contexts and at different scales. We aim to identify relevant stakeholders and highlight the importance of science, data, governance, and policy in creating long-lasting peace and the security of water.
