Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Symmetry is an important factor in various engineering research fields, and it is fundamental to function and design. In particular, the complex system of manufactured parts, symmetric and asymmetric, is characteristic of the transport industry (for example, in aviation, road, and rail vehicles) and constitutes a significant issue.

Currently, efforts are being made to automate transport and improve its efficiency while reducing cost. Additive manufacturing techniques are being increasingly used to ensure the feasibility of highly complex projects. These techniques involve the production of items based on 3D computer-aided design, computational geometry, and the graphical visualization of prototypes. Moreover, computer systems and numerical optimization techniques play a key role in the logistic problems involved with achieving high performance in a transport company.

As a result, novel engineering technologies, computer-aided manufacture, and sophisticated modeling methods are being implemented.

There is now a requirement for mathematical analysis, not just to obtain operational efficiency but also for intelligent design. Transport (both operations and facilities) is subject to the same techniques used for VLSI and circuit board optimization. The emergence of robotics and the growing power of machine learning have transformed warehouse and fulfilment center layout to allow more flexible use, and this creates new dimensions for design.

It is our honor to invite researchers to submit original experimental and theoretical articles addressing the abovementioned issues in the mechanical and transport engineering fields and the related fields of mathematical analysis, robotics, and computational technology.

Submit your paper and select the Journal “Symmetry” and the Special Issue “Symmetry in Mechanical and Transport Engineering, Transport Logistics, and Mathematical Design of Efficient Transport Facilities” via: MDPI submission system. Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

The repair rate is a very important parameter for system maintainability and can be defined as a frequency of successfully performed repair actions on a failed component per unit of time. This paper analyzes the integral characteristics of a stochastic repair rate for corresponding values of availability in a system operating under maintenance contracts. The probability density function (PDF) of the repair rate has been studied extensively and it was concluded that it is not a symmetric function so its mean value does not correspond to its maximum. Based on that, the equation for the envelope line of the PDF maximums of the repair rate has been provided. Namely, instead of repair rate PDF equations, we can use envelope line parameters for certain calculations, which are expressed in a simpler mathematical form. That will reduce time required for calculations and prediction and enhance reactions in failure events. Further, for the analytical and numerical evaluation of a system performance, the annual repair rate PDFs are analyzed, such as particular solutions of corresponding differential equation, while the existence of a singular solution is considered and analyzed under different conditions. Moreover, we derived optimal values of availability for which the PDF maximums have been obtained. Finally, in order to generalize the behavior of the repair process, a partial differential equation, as a function of the repair rate process and availability parameter, has been formed. Full article
