Special Issue "Toxins and Public Health"
A special issue of Toxins (ISSN 2072-6651).
Deadline for manuscript submissions: closed (31 August 2021).
Toxins are poisonous substances produced from plants, animals, and microorganisms that may affect human health, either directly or indirectly (via food and water). In this sense, public health (the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and improving welfare) is closely related to toxins profile, their effects on human health, and control measures. The main acute effects of toxins on human health are regulated by the possibility of contamination and overconsumption, and are most commonly allergic reactions, food poisoning symptoms, or possibly unpredictable idiosyncratic responses. Long-term health consequences include effects on the immune, reproductive, or nervous systems, as well as cancer. As toxins are considered to be of high risk for human health, international standards and codes of practice to limit exposure to natural toxins from certain foods are in force. There is a constant challenge in the research community to characterize the toxicity of toxins, introducing novel isolation and quantification methods, proposing new monitoring models, assessing consumer exposure, reporting incidents, and implementing the relevant public health measures. The toxicological and regulatory overview of toxins is considered to be a topic of high interest both for the research community and for regulators. The aim of this Special Issue is to present all-inclusive research outcomes on important multidisciplinary insights relating to toxins and public health.
