Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The discovery of the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe, almost exactly twenty years ago, has had a striking and unprecedented impact on cosmology. Attempts to observationally pin down the nature of this mysterious cosmic acceleration, as well as theoretically explain the mechanism behind it, have been monumental. A joint endeavour to understand this spectacular phenomenon, and to resolve one of the most difficult cosmic conundrums ever, is now ongoing by theoretical cosmologists, particle physicists and experts on gravity on the theoretical side, and a variety of large-scale collaborations and cosmological surveys on the observational side.

The focus in this Special Issue is on understanding the evolution of the Universe at late times with an emphasis on the nature of cosmic acceleration, both theoretically and observationally. We invite and encourage experts in theoretical, phenomenological and observational physics, astrophysics and cosmology, to join us in this Special Issue by submitting their articles on cosmic acceleration and related topics.

The articles may have reference to (but are not restricted to) the following topics:

  • Current and future constraints on cosmic acceleration
  • The cosmological constant problems
  • Stress-testing ΛCDM
  • Alternatives to Λ: Dark energy, modified theories of gravity, etc.
  • Observing dark energy
  • Gravity in cosmology: theory and observation
  • De Sitter and quintessence from fundamental physics: String theory, supergravity, etc.
  • Theoretical problems with de Sitter vacua
  • Connection to early Universe: Quintessential inflation

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Universe is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
