Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nonlinearity has been known to be a frequent companion of engineering structures for a long time now. Yet, the research community’s interest in improving our awareness of nonlinear structural dynamics phenomena has gained more importance in recent decades. This can be linked to the emerging industrial need for efficient and lightweight designs in several engineering sectors, as well as the necessity of monitoring and characterizing pre-existent structures adopting nonlinear tools. Moreover, nonlinear dynamical phenomena continue to be an extremely intriguing research topic with many unsolved questions, opening a wide range of research opportunities.

This Special Issue of Vibration will gather relevant research contributions about the most significant and emerging topics in the field of nonlinear structural dynamics. Relevant topics include the following:

  • Numerical methods for nonlinear systems: harmonic balance, multiple time/space scales, iterative solvers, nonlinear modeling;
  • Experimental nonlinear dynamics: random and harmonic excitations, shaker-structure interaction, benchmark experiments;
  • Model validation and system identification: data-driven model updating, experimental validation of nonlinear models;
  • Nonlinear phenomena in structures and structural monitoring: bridges, cable transportation systems, overhead contact lines, turbines, vehicles, etc.;
  • Reduced-order modeling: nonlinear normal modes, nonlinear manifolds, sub-structuring techniques;
  • Nonlinear interactions: systems with internal resonances;
  • Nonlinear damping phenomena: contact interfaces, friction, fluid–structure interaction;
  • Large-amplitude vibrations: nonlinear stress-strain, large rotations;
  • Vibration control of nonlinear structures: nonlinear control theory, stability, linearization.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Vibration is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Premature and simultaneous buckling of several steel braces in steel structures due to the prolonged duration of a seismic motion is one of the issues that must be addressed in the next version of Eurocode 8. In an effort to contribute towards the improvement of the seismic design provisions of Eurocode 8, an evaluation of the overall behavior of some steel building-foundation systems under the action of long duration seismic motions is performed herein by means of nonlinear time-history seismic analyses, taking into account soil–structure interaction (SSI) effects. In particular, the maximum seismic response results—in terms of permanent interstorey drifts, overturning moments and base shears of the steel buildings as well as of the permanent settlement and tilting of their foundations—are computed. It is found that the seismic performance of steel buildings when subjected to long duration seismic motions is: (i) acceptable for the two and five-storey fixed base steel buildings and for the two-storey steel buildings with SSI effects included; (ii) unacceptable for the eight-storey fixed base steel buildings and for the five and eight-storey steel buildings with SSI effects included. In all cases of steel buildings with SSI effects included, the seismic performance of the mat foundation, as expressed by the computed values of residual settlement and tilting, is always acceptable.
