Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that Viruses will be awarding a prize to a young investigator demonstrating excellence in virology. The nominations will be assessed by an evaluation committee chaired by the Editor-in-Chief,

Dr. Eric O. Freed.

This award will recognize groundbreaking contributions to the field of virology by a virologist under the age of 40 (by the date of the deadline, 31 January 2021).

The nomination package must include:
– The candidate’s CV
– A letter of nomination from an established virologist not directly associated with the candidate

The letter should highlight the candidate’s achievements and contributions to the field of virology. Additional references will be requested by the committee, if necessary.

The young investigator award will consist of 2000 Swiss Francs, an offer to publish a paper free of charge without a fixed deadline in Viruses (subject to peer review), an invitation to speak at the Viruses 2022 international virology conference and an engraved plaque.

The 2019 Viruses Young Investigator in Virology Prize: Dr. Jason McLellan, the University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA.

The 2017 Viruses Young Investigator in Virology Prize: Dr. Andrew B. Ward, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA, USA.

The 2015 Viruses Young Investigator in Virology Prize: Dr. Jesse D. Bloom, Division of Basic Sciences, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, WA, USA.
