4 November 2021 Water Webinar | Modern Challenges in Industrial Hydraulics

Modern challenges in industrial hydraulics include different domains of hydrodynamics, such as the investigation and implementation of the physical and experimental applications, and research into modelling and simulation of the characteristics associated with water flowing in pipe systems. Using advanced numerical and physical models in field experiments, and tests in different types of laboratory set-ups, specialists in hydraulics present the best analyses and new design concepts. They apply different eco-design techniques and use advanced simulation tools to obtain safe and suitable solutions for industrial hydraulic problems, as well as those relating to the pressure control, energy dissipation and production, and complex hydraulic phenomena under an integrated water–energy nexus.

There are many structural challenges facing the development of modern systems, from the water supply to the population and economic activities, to the improvement of water sectors.

The population growth results in a concentration of water demand and a consequent need for water management. The use of advanced studies and technologies, as well as the adoption of more robust control and management models, are necessary to better suit the safety water systems. The concept of smart and integrated water systems utilizes advanced information technologies for system monitoring data to achieve greater efficiency in the resource allocation. In addition, to increase the system efficiency, the prevention and the early detection of problems allow the development of the best practice in the asset management. A smart system uses real-time data, optimization variables, dynamic controls, and smart meters in order to balance the demand, minimize the overpressures, and save water and energy.

1 January–31 December 2021 International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK 2021)

The International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK) is a campaign to educate the world about the many benefits that caves and karst provide to humanity. It also raises awareness about some of the challenges of living in karst areas, and how to overcome them. The IYCK is organized by the International Union of Speleology with the support of approximately 200 international partner organizations. Together, they are organizing hundreds of local and international events including lectures, workshops, exhibitions, books, conferences, news media meetings, the cleaning of caves and sinkholes, field trips, videos, research, and other activities. The Special Issue of Water on karst will help highlight the unique and complex hydrogeology of karst aquifers that hydrogeologists and water planners need to understand to sustainably use these groundwater systems. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IYCK will be celebrated in 2022. More partners and events are always welcome.

The Water Special Issue "Geochemical Processes of Karst and Karst Paleoenvironments" will accept full papers addressing the following related topics:

karst landscapes; karst aquifers; rock–water interactions; karst soils; trace elements; emerging contaminants; biogeochemistry; soil and water contamination; lake sedimentary records; speleothem records; cave sediment; paleohydrology; stable isotopes

15–17 October 2021 Meet Us at the Advanced Membrane Technology Summit for Water Treatment 2021

Shanghai, China

MDPI will be attending the Advanced Membrane Technology Summit for Water Treatment 2021, jointly hosted by the International Water Association (IWA), China Regional Office and Tongji University, which will be held from 15 to 17 October 2021, in Shanghai, China.

Famous domestic and foreign experts will give keynote speeches during the conference, in addition to poster exhibitions, postgraduate seminars and other academic activities. This summit is focused on the theme of "Sustainable Development of Membrane Water Treatment Technology under the Background of Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality". Topics covered by the summit include, but are not limited to, membrane water and wastewater treatment, new theories of membrane processes, advanced membranes and membrane modules, advanced membrane processes and combined processes, sustainable membrane water treatment technologies, and the industrial application of membrane technology.

1–4 November 2021 The 7th International Conference on Water Resource and Environment (WRE 2021)

The International Conference on Water Resource and Environment (WRE) is an annually held conference that highlights the needs to maintain the sustainability of indispensable water resources under increasing uncertainty and to protect the fragile water environments under the growing concern over the intensive use of water we are facing today. WRE was successfully held online in 2020, and physically held in Shanghai, Qingdao, Kaohsiung, and Macau in the past years.

The 7th International Conference on Water Resource and Environment (WRE 2021) will be held in a hybrid format during the dates November 1–4, 2021:

Offline in Xi'an, China: It is one of the oldest cities and the oldest of the four great ancient capitals of China. It is the capital of 13 ancient dynasties in China, which could date back 1200 years.

Online via Microsoft Teams: The online presentation will be arranged along with physical presentations. If participants are not available to make the live presentation during those days, a pre-recorded video presentation is warmly welcome as well. The conference committee will play the video presentation during the conference day: 

  • The proceedings of full-length papers will be published in IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science EES, indexed by Ei Compendex, Scopus, CPCI, Inspec, etc.;
  • Select papers will be recommended for publication in SCI journals with an impact factor.

17–21 October 2022 INTERPRAEVENT International Symposium 2022

Taichung, Taiwan

INTERPRAEVENT 2022 will be held in October 2022 in Taichung, Taiwan. The symposium is organized by the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan (Taiwan), jointly with the Chinese Soil and Water Conservation Society (Taiwan) and the National Chung Hsing University (Taiwan), with the main topic “Nature Disaster Occurrence, Reduction and Restoration in Mountain Regions”. In the symposium, the INTERPRAEVENT society will address natural hazards from the aspects of investigating the phenomena, monitoring occurrences, analyzing risks, strengthening governance, increasing resilience, mitigating disasters, restoring impacted communities and enhancing preparedness. The aspects are converged into the following sessions (see below).

  • Disasters caused by dam–lake outbursts and driftwood, debris/mud flows;
  • Disasters caused by landslides and rockslides;
  • Disasters caused by seasonal floods and surface erosions;
  • The relationships between natural hazards and climate change;
  • Strategy from natural disasters to restoration;
  • Stream ecosystem services and nature-based solutions;
  • Disaster-resilient community and rural regeneration.

Firstly, the oral presenters (excluding the invited lectures) must submit manuscripts to the SI of Water; if accepted, the papers can be published in Water and collected in INTERPRAEVENT Proceedings.
