Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Digitalization may be broadly defined as the application of digital information from multiple owners and sources and in various formats to address strategic challenges for the improvement of materials, processes, supply and services. The recent development of technologies such as personal mobile computing, cloud based computing and ubiquitous internet, open new improvement perspectives for digital asset and infrastructure management. The overall objective of this Special Issue is to face current and future challenges associated with digital infrastructure for urban water systems, and fostering research improving urban water management for constantly growing, interconnected cities. The aim is to promote the deployment of smart infrastructure and intelligent data analysis to aid water industry management. This is a timely proposal as we are facing a new era in which smart-grids and the so-called Industry 4.0 are successfully exploiting cyber–physical systems connecting and communicating with each other and with other actuators. Urban water systems also need quick integration and sharing of assets and infrastructure across multiple utilities. Besides water, this endeavour definitely includes energy, waste and telecommunications. Contributions to this Special Issue are expected to explore new research avenues that combine cutting-edge research methods on the operations and services that enable us to develop, run and maintain autonomous urban water systems. This Special Issue calls, then, for papers on topics such as sensor network analysis in water systems, smart asset management, near real-time control and operation of water distribution systems, advanced metering infrastructure architectures, model network calibration, and those contributions to minimising the impact of climate change and extreme weather events in current and future urban water management. In terms of applied methodologies, papers on those topics based on such techniques as artificial intelligence, complex networks, nature-inspired and agent-based computing, and divide-and-conquer algorithms, among others, will be welcome.
