Risks from Emerging Pathogenic Organisms in Water

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid spread of COVID-19 across the globe has highlighted the vulnerability of society to emerging pathogens. The focus of this issue of Water will be on such threats, including SARS-CoV-2, antibacterial-resistant organisms, novel viruses, amoeba, and opportunistic pathogens. in source water, drinking water, reclaimed water and wastewater. Of particular interest are studies of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and feces, and the use of this information as a method of COVID-19 surveillance and to inform public health actions. We encourage submissions that focus on the presence or potential for such agents in drinking water as well as the expected or observed impacts in human populations. Studies examining variation in susceptibility to adverse outcomes as well as disparities facing sub-populations are also encouraged as long as the there is a clear focus on emerging pathogenic organisms. Similarly, investigations regarding the contamination of source waters and input to source waters (e.g. wastewater) will be considered as long as the work clearly links the results to the impacts (potential or actual) on drinking water quality and/or human health. We would like this special issue to be a forum for focusing attention on these problems, highlight the actual and potential impacts and foster greater collaboration among researchers in this field.
