Special Issue Information
Many new mothers with psychiatric illnesses discontinue their medications from fear of exposing the breast-feeding baby to the drugs. As a result, the symptoms of their psychiatric illness may emerge or worsen, exposing the infant to an unwell mother—a known risk factor contributing to adverse long term outcomes in the child. In this issue, we will review data on the safety of psychiatric medications during breast-feeding, so that women and their clinicians can make informed decisions about which medications are safe to continue on during pregnancy. Antidepressants are the most common medications that new mothers are likely to take, but we will also review data on mood stabilizers, antipschotics and anxiolytics, with the goal of providing a comprehensive overview on this topic.
