The study highlights the effect of wood moisture in the transport of sawlogs. The study is interesting but requires the following revisions. Please check the grammar throughout the manuscript.

Abstract: 

Line 13…..“in the wood industry in many countries”….Revise the sentence…..you may write “in the wood industry of many countries”

Line 21…..Write “approx.” in full or use the symbol of approximately

Line 21-22…..Write dry weight instead of drying-weight 

Line 22…..0.878 Mg·m-3…..delete full stop and maintain uniformity throughout the manuscript.

Line 26…..month – season….. Write month or season.

Line 27…..The indicated strong correlations……Revise the sentence.

Introduction:

Mann-Whitney Test is not mentioned in the Materials and Methods section.

Results:

Line 136……Delete discussion

Table 1…..Write m-3 in bracket……..I feel that this table could have been included in the Materials and Methods section. Please include it there and make a separate sub-heading.

Table 4……Specify the correlation values as r2 and also mention the significance level (at 1 or 5%) in the footnotes. Keep one side value only. Either bottom or head.

Figure 8 and 9……Specify the sample size (n). It gives clarity on the number of samples used.

Discussion:

Since there is a good amount of statistical data in the manuscript, there is a provision for more discussion with appropriate recent citations that would enhance the quality of the draft.

Conclusions:

Data related to moisture content is missing.

We did changes in all pointed lines (13, 21, 22, 26, 27, 35, 37, 38, 81, 82, 83, 136), as suggested. The text has been enriched with a few additions resulting from the general comments.

As a result of the changes and additions made, the text has been shifted in relation to the original line numbering (new version of manuscript).

Loader scales are widely used to define the mass of the load in trucks. This should be commented in the article.

Please, check the English language, "button" is not the same than "butt-end", row 54   :)

There must be a comment concerning the fastness of the supply chain. How long timber has been on a road-side before transportation? That affects greatly on the green density.

For energy wood drying models have been implemented with success and they could be built easily also for sawlogs (https://hrcak.srce.hr/index.php?show=clanak&id_clanak_jezik=223376). This opportunity should be commented in the discussion.

In my opinion, the manuscript can be accepted after minor revision. Following are my detailed comments:

  • in the title, move "Pinus sylvestris L." straight after "Scots pine";
  • row 35: this sentence is too strong. Moisture content does not "determine" the other properties, but has a relevant effect on them;
  • row 45: replace "pine" with "Scots pine"; check the entire text for the same change (for instance at row 65);
  • row 46: replace "Scot" with "Scots"; check the entire text for the same change;
  • row 54: replace "button" with "butt";
  • row 75: is this division in 4 classes based on a standard? Please specify;
  • rows 74-76: is there a min. dimension for the thick end of large-size wood? Please specify;
  • row 97: replace "In a research of 191..." with "191 out of 515 deliveries were...";
  • roe 108-109: replace "However, there is concern... of the total load" with "However, this method can lead to unaccurate determinations and shall be taken as indicative";
  • row 135: in Materials and methods, state that the level of significance was set at 0.05 level;
  • Table 2: I suggest replacing this table with a box-plot graph;
  • row 156: In the entire text, I would report p-values using 3 only digits after the comma (for instance, p = 0.735);
  • row 164: replace "p = 0.0000" with "p<0.0001"; check the entire text for the same change. If authors use 3 digits after the comma, as suggested above, this becomes p < 0.001;
  • row 193: why 526? This should be 515, right?

The only exception is table 2. We did not change it into a graph, because it wants to present precise numerical data and it would be difficult to read them from the graph.
