Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This manuscript reviewed wide range of the previous literature studying sustainability aspects of poultry production. I believe this manuscript organized various fields of studies in the unified frameworks and provided enough contribution to the literature. Except for the necessity of improving the visibility of Figure 1b, I have no objection.

Author Response

Point 1: "Except for the necessity of improving the visibility of Figure 1b, I have no objection"

Response 1:  The Figure 1b has been magnified, and in order to make this possible, the figure has been rotated and the layout of the manuscript has been changed in order to adaption to the enlarged figure.

Reviewer 2 Report

This is a well written paper that addresses a very important topic.

You make a good case for a systematic approach that properly embraces the three major elements of sustainability, environmental, economic and social, but reach the disappointing conclusion from your thorough analysis of existing publications that no studies so far have attempted this comprehensive approach.

In discussion, you make the modest suggestion that future studies should 'consider at a conceptual level how different dimensions of sustainability...….are best assessed at farm level'.  You have obviously thought how this might be done.  I suggest that your paper would be much stronger if you included in outline a structure and design for such a study, possibly involving collaboration between research sites in different countries.

Response 1: We have added a following sentence in line 351 : "A way forward would be to perform an interdisciplinary study in order to develop a conceptual framework for sustainability performance assessment of poultry production at farm and territorial level, where all three dimensions of sustainability are assessed, including potential synergies and conflicts between sustainability goals and targets."
