The change of territorial organization in the 18th century in Spain was strongly related to the preservation of the local heritage. This is a unique and excellent paper. No comments, I accept it to publish.
BUT: Figures. I cannot see the details. How can you polish up these ones???

Reviewer 3 Report

The article is mainly of a historical nature. The research is justified from the point of view of broadening the knowledge of the activities of builder masters and architects in Spain in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The construction activity of master builder Vicente López Carder is described. So far, there is no scientific research focused solely on Vicente López Cardera. The introduction broadly describes the principles of professional activity of masters builders and architects in Spain. It was imperative to understand the role of the master builders during this period. Cardera's activities focused on maintaining municipal buildings and municipal infrastructure in good technical condition and the necessary repairs. These works were of key importance for the quality of life of the citizens. The conclusion was rightly formulated that to some extent this type of work is compatible with modern principles of sustainable development. The text is illustrated with authentic drawings by Cardera.

It is an important testimony to the drawing skills of building masters and architects of the period under study.

Drawings are also historical documents expanding knowledge about architectural objects that have not survived to our times. The article is well organized. Even though most of the references are written in Spanish, the research is supported by well-chosen references and other available sources.

This paper is good but there are a couple of short comings that need to be addressed, which are as follows:

1.) Lines 449-453: The topic of the conflict between the preservation and modernization of buildings is interesting and important today. Do the authors have conclusions for contemporary work on historical objects? If so, it is worth introducing them. Best for Chapter: Conclusions. But without sacrificing the value of the article, it doesn't need to be developed.

2.) Lines 254-476: Conclusions on the use of research results should be expanded. Information on the use of the drawing heritage (engineering graphics) is not sufficiently comprehensive. It seems that the possibility of virtual (3D) reconstruction gives wider possibilities of using this technique to restore historical knowledge. Also, conclusions can be drawn that will be used in the future in planning the sustainable development of cities. A short extension with the mentioned aspects would increase the value of the publication. The article would also be more in line with the Sustainability profile.

3.) Chapter numbering should be corrected. Immediately after chapter 3 is chapter 5. Should be: 4. Conclusions.

4.) Minor errors in the references should be corrected. They should comply with the journal's requirements.

Thank you very much for this comment, that enable us to highlight the innovative of this study within the section of the conclusions.

  1. If there are similar studies, a comparison of the results would be indicated.

Indeed, there are no similar studies concerning this master builder. What we have found in the literature is some reference of other one “Juan Antonio Camacho”, who worked also in Montilla and in the Diocese of Cordoba. In this sense, the authors have briefly explained this in the section of the conclusions.

Thank you very much for reviewing this manuscript.

Reviewer 5 Report

The text entitled "Graphic engineering in the preservation of the municipal heritage of Montilla from the 18th century: master builder Vicente López Cardera in Montilla" is not a suitable text for this scientific journal and needs to be completely rewritten for a new evaluation.

Abstract - The abstract does not provide the text with information about the objective, the relevance of the topic, the methodology used and the results obtained. It needs to be redone.

Keywords - Authors should limit keywords to a maximum of five words that represent the text.

Introduction - The introduction is insufficient and does not bring basic elements to a scientific text such as: provide a global view of the subject addressed (contextualization), contemplate the relevance of the subject (justification), present why it was prepared (objective), present the research problem, mention previous works that address the subject in question and generically address what will be studied in the rest of the article (text structure).

Materials and methods - The criteria used must be explained, including for the choice of anything that is unusual, such as, for example, methods that differ from those commonly accepted. Sufficient information must also be provided for another researcher to be able to reproduce the same experiment: some basic questions such as the sample material, instruments and the procedures.

Thank you very much for your appreciation concerning the title. The authors have reached other drafting of it. ‘Graphic engineering in the sustainable preservation of the municipal heritage of Montilla from the 18th century: master builder Vicente López Cardera in Montilla’.

Abstract - The abstract does not provide the text with information about the objective, the relevance of the topic, the methodology used and the results obtained. It needs to be redon.

The authors thank this reviewer for such a comment. The Abstract has been modified in order to clarify the aim, the methodology and the results of the paper.

Keywords - Authors should limit keywords to a maximum of five words that represent the text.

Authors have shortened the number of keywords, providing 5 keywords: architecture, graphic engineering, cultural heritage, drawing, civil works, sustainability.

Thank you very much for this comment. In the new improved version, the authors have modified the introduction, trying to provide a global view of the subject addressed, justifying the relevance of the subject, its main aim, and the state-of the art. Indeed, a point concerning literature review has been added. Point 1.3.

Thank you for this comment. In this sense, the authors have much improved the ‘Material and Methods’ part of the new provided version of the manuscript.

Thank you for revising this paper.

The subject of this paper is still vague. Is it people or architecture that is relevant to sustainability? If the emphasis is on architectural concepts, how can sustainability be reflected?

Response to Reviewer 4 Comments The authors appreciate the comments of the reviewers, that have helped much improve and clarify the manuscript. In any case, a new version of the manuscript is available.  Reviewer 4

The subject of this paper is still vague. Is it people or architecture that is relevant to sustainability? If the emphasis is on architectural concepts, how can sustainability be reflected?

The authors certainly appreciate this issue/query to be further explained.

Through the unpublished document that is analyzed on a memory of intervention in municipal buildings and infrastructures in the town of Montilla (Córdoba, Spain) it is intended to study the historical importance of monitoring the evolution of cities, as well as the origin and roots more remote than what we today understand by sustainability in relation to hygienism and the ideas of the Enlightenment. The appearance of the hygienist movement with the Enlightenment promotes awareness in this regard and a subsequent normative development. And in this way, it has been explained over the manuscript. We understand it as a practice that precedes the current concept of sustainability, in which the reuse of materials, as well as the concern for the hygienic conditions of buildings and cities, can be considered as a precedent of the current concern for sustainable urbanism.

The importance of this document lies in the fact that it is a model of the first concerns for hygiene and sustainability in buildings and public infrastructures in the Spanish 18th century, detailing in its memory the use of materials, describing in detail the buildings, many of them today day disappeared, and accompanying them with graphics and plans that bring us closer to them today.

Therefore, we, as authors, consider here that both people and architecture are important for sustainability, not being able to do one without the other. Sustainable architecture takes into account the impact of a building throughout its Life Cycle (construction, use and demolition) but it is developed by people. The design of buildings, the use of materials, optimizing natural resources to minimize the impact, are of great importance, here is the fundamental role of people. Today there are numerous aspects to take into account, integrating bioclimatic parameters and seeking to optimize aspects such as natural ventilation or lighting, in addition to taking advantage of the climatic conditions of the place. We observe some of them in the work of López Cardera, when in the report he highlights aspects of the materials to be used, how to improve the efficiency and safety of some buildings, such as the slaughterhouse or the prison, the lighting of others or the need to fix and improvement of the sources that supplied water to the city.

The authors certainly hope to have responded your query and thank to it we present now a much more improved version of the manuscript.

Reviewer 5 Report

The authors made a major restructuring of the text " Graphic engineering in the sustainable preservation of the municipal heritage of Montilla from the 18th century : master builder Vicente López Cardera in Montilla" which is now really looking like a scientific paper, despite needing tweaks and improvements.

The necessary changes are as follows:

Point 1. Assess whether the title still reflects the article, since the works of the master builder seem to have been broader, covering the whole of Córdoba and not just Montilla.

Item 1.3. Literature review - Expand the literature review by bringing to the text authors who talk about hygiene, the importance of studies for archeology and the history of Córdoba.

Bring quotes that highlight the current view of the historical importance of monitoring the evolution of cities through graphics and the role of historians in this construction of the context of the time.

A good example that needs citations is between lines 156 and 159.

Line 170 - Agenda 2030 is a little out of focus at this point in the text, perhaps the authors could make a figure with the timeline of archaeological, architectural and hygienist movements, as it is known that at that time there was no concern with reuse suitable of materials.

They served as landfills for new constructions, being historical objects demolished and removed at the mercy of a government at the time.

I believe that this same movement occurred in the city analyzed, that of Córdoba.

Item 2. Materials and Methods - Now I believe that the materials and methods bring an evolution to the scientific journal, all that remains is to indicate the period in which the research was carried out and what were the classification criteria for inclusion in the studies.

Line 335 - Are there historical documents in the churches (identified by the authors) that can prove the role of the Master of Works?

Lines 332 to 334 - Authors need to bring to the scientific article the role of Environmentalism for Engineering and Architecture at the time.

The authors have previously recognized that the works, including those that no longer exist, had an impact on the environment and with each new work, the society of the time impacted soils that potentially had their own stories reflected in the graphics and in the period plans.

If we expand this view, the archaeological sites of the time were constantly modified with new works and without records.

How did Vicente López Cardera contribute to the conservation of Cordoba's history?

Again, it seems to me an inconsistency to bring up the 2030 Agenda without creating a historical line.

Line 369 - Please explain a little more the meaning of this sentence.

Line 388 - It would be important to bring quotes from Franciscan documents to the text, considering it was a secular order and of great historical importance in the records of the facts of the time, even because the churches had a notary role at that time.

Lines 441 to 444 - It is very important to correlate the water entry points with the idea of cleaning the places at the time of construction. Hygiene was a worrying factor, as high mortality rates were associated with poor hygiene in the areas.

Question for the authors: no text of the time addressed the existence of favelas in Córdoba? The same were normal in other regions of Spain and Portugal and carried their own history that could be worked on in the vision of the aforementioned master builder.

Water and sewage were part of these places and caused sanitary problems for everyone.

Figure 5 - Each photo must be transformed into a separate figure with its own numbering, accompanied by a text, a small paragraph addressing the importance of this figure being in the text.

Line 499 - It is an important contribution to the preservation of the country's historical and cultural heritage.

Figure 6 - Each photo must be transformed into a separate figure with its own numbering, accompanied by a text, a small paragraph addressing the importance of this figure being in the text.

Line 559 - How do the authors make a parallel between the urban development movements of the time and sustainable urban planning?

How can the recent Smart Cities contribute to this process of sustainable construction of cities, especially with the existing movements in Europe in the 21st century? Make a history line of evolution...

Line 538 - The document is a historic find and really deserves to be highlighted in modern science.

Line 554 - In parallel with current construction techniques and existing information and communication technologies (drone photos, BIM, satellite photos , georeferenced mappings, etc.) this is now taking place.

Lines 563 to 566 - This paragraph should be set aside as a possible future study, as well as the creation of historical tourist routes based on the studies carried out.

Author Response

Please, see the attachement.

Response to Reviewer 5 Comments The authors appreciate the comments of the reviewer, that have helped much improve and clarify the manuscript. In any case, a new version of the manuscript is available.  Reviewer 5 The authors made a major restructuring of the text " Graphic engineering in the sustainable preservation of the municipal heritage of Montilla from the 18th century: master builder Vicente López Cardera in Montilla " which is now really looking like a scientific paper, despite needing tweaks and improvements.

The necessary changes are as follows:

Point 1. Assess whether the title still reflects the article, since the works of the master builder seem to have been broader, covering the whole of Córdoba and not just Montilla.

This research is focused on the document found in the Manuel Ruiz-Luque Foundation, which only refers to Montilla city (not to the whole province of Cordoba). However, the authors have slightly mentioned and highlighted some of the works Lopez-Cardera carried out in the whole province of Cordoba to give the readers a better context. In our honest point of view, approaching and covering the entire work of Lopez-Cardera would be considered for a future and extended research. Therefore, the authors have clarified it in the title, writing Cordoba, Spain in between brackets. In this context, we, the authors thank the reviewer for such a suggestion, enabling us to modify the title.

The authors thank again the reviewer for this comment. In this sense, we have much expanded the literature review and the citations within the new version of the text. Literature review about hygienic in the archeological and history fields have been expanded.

The authors thank again the reviewer for this input. In this sense, the authors have notably modified the text to better present the literature review presenting the idea of different hygienist movements. Adding a historical line (Fig. 1) as well and Table 1. with the most important milestones in this field.

Item 2. Materials and Methods - Now I believe that the materials and methods bring an evolution to the scientific journal, all that remains is to indicate the period in which the research was carried out and what were the classification criteria for inclusion in the studies.

The authors thank the 5th reviewer again. The period and the classification criteria considered in this research have been introduced within the methodology part.

Line 335 - Are there historical documents in the churches (identified by the authors) that can prove the role of the Master of Works?

Indeed, there is some documentation of the interventions of López-Cardera in some churches in the province of Córdoba in the Archive of the Bishopric of Córdoba, but it is scattered. In this sense, the authors think that perhaps there might be some other historical documentation in the archives of these churches, but since it was not the focus of this research, it was not searched and studied. Although, it would be very interesting for future studies.

The authors thank very much for such a suggestion. Therefore, the contribution of López-Cardera in the preservation of the history of Córdoba has been explained and developed in part of the introduction. As it is said within the text, the work undertaken over the centuries have modified the cities. And despite there are no record of them, unlike today, its evolution can be known thanks to archaeological and historical research. This is the importance of this research work, since thanks to it we can learn about the work of an unknown key figure in the conservation of the historical heritage of a region, specifically the city of Montilla, in Córdoba.

Again, it seems to me an inconsistency to bring up the 2030 Agenda without creating a historical line.

In this sense authors have added Table 1 with the historical line and milestones.

Line 369 - Please explain a little more the meaning of this sentence.

This part of the text has been much developed and explained. See last paragraph of the point 3.2.2.1.  Civil Architecture of López Cardera

Line 388 - It would be important to bring quotes from Franciscan documents to the text, considering it was a secular order and of great historical importance in the records of the facts of the time, even because the churches had a notary role at that time.

The authors thank again the reviewer for such a comment which tries to improve the manuscript. Therefore, some references have been added to the document following your instructions.

Lines 441 to 444 - It is very important to correlate the water entry points with the idea of cleaning the places at the time of construction. Hygiene was a worrying factor, as high mortality rates were associated with poor hygiene in the areas.

All this part of the text has been revised and modified accordingly to 5th reviewer suggestion.

Question for the authors: no text of the time addressed the existence of favelas in Córdoba? The same were normal in other regions of Spain and Portugal and carried their own history that could be worked on in the vision of the aforementioned master builder. Water and sewage were part of these places and caused sanitary problems for everyone.

The place object of our investigation is the city of Montilla, located in the province of Córdoba, where there were no favelas, but precarious neighborhoods on the outskirts. Certainly, In Montilla there are stories of the city of the time, but they hardly describe these humble areas of the city. On the contrary, in Córdoba, the capital of the province and a city with a great history, there are innumerable studies on documents of the time and the archaeological work that is constantly being carried out. This statement also highlights the value of this research because of its uniqueness.

Figure 5 - Each photo must be transformed into a separate figure with its own numbering, accompanied by a text, a small paragraph addressing the importance of this figure being in the text.

The authors have followed the reviewer suggestion and divided Fig 5 into two.

Line 499 - It is an important contribution to the preservation of the country's historical and cultural heritage.

The authors thank the reviewer for his/her consideration. Indeed, from the very beginning we have tried to highlight the important of this contribution on the preservation of the cultural heritage.

Figure 6 - Each photo must be transformed into a separate figure with its own numbering, accompanied by a text, a small paragraph addressing the importance of this figure being in the text.

The authors have extended the explanation of the Figure.

Line 559 - How do the authors make a parallel between the urban development movements of the time and sustainable urban planning?

The authors thank the reviewer for reaching such an issue. It is true that at the time we are dealing with, the concept of sustainability and the care for the environment, as we understand both concepts today, did not exist. Indeed, the riverbeds were often used as landfills, but the appearance of the hygienist movement with the Enlightenment prompted the awareness in this regard and subsequent regulatory development. We understand it as a practice that antecedents the current concept of sustainability, in which the reuse of materials as well as the concern for the hygienic conditions of buildings can be considered as a precedent of the current concern for sustainable urban planning. This was also accompanied by a normative development within the framework of the hygienist development in Spain during the XIX century and later, until our days.

How can the recent Smart Cities contribute to this process of sustainable construction of cities, especially with the existing movements in Europe in the 21st century? Make a history line of evolution...

The authors have added the history line and some other literature review supporting this evolution.

Line 538 - The document is a historic find and really deserves to be highlighted in modern science.

The authors thank the reviewer for this consideration.

Line 554 - In parallel with current construction techniques and existing information and communication technologies (drone photos, BIM, satellite photos , georeferenced mappings, etc.) this is now taking place.

Indeed, this comment has been approached, setting an example in the city of Montilla in relation to the investigation on the water catchment system in Montilla, based on the discovery of part of the conduits during the performance of municipal works in 2017 (Carranza-Cañadas, et al., 2022). A 3D modeling of the water catchment of the Fuente de “El Cuadrado” is made and the topography of the land is expanded in accordance with the plans of Sánchez Molero, serving as a basis for future archaeological studies when determining its exact layout.

Lines 563 to 566 - This paragraph should be set aside as a possible future study, as well as the creation of historical tourist routes based on the studies carried out.

Thanks to the reviewer, this useful suggestion has been introduced for future research.

Certainly, the authors thank very much the reviewer for all the comments and suggestions provided. We, as authors, certainly hope, the new version of the manuscript submitted now is much more improved thank to them.
