Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

I loved the article in such a topic that is controversial and not easily spoken about. A little bit of the biopolitical context is necesary because Latin America is a regio full of challenges, CEPAL has a good report on covid-19 pandemics evolution, also regarging food security status in the region . Venezuelan National Academy of Medicine (Gaceta Medica de Caracas) also, has a volume dedicated to covid 19 and its consequences. Also, I would include in the introduction a little bit on how the thousand of years of "humanization" cannot be erased and the dilemmas for feeding the global polulation exist. For example: the anti- food  industry positions vs famines intervention urgencies where therapeutic foods are needed and in consequence ultraprocessed foods are utilized.  How to face the need for a healthier planet and feeding people the best way, when facing these challenges, and how can indigenous food system approaches can help in solving these dilemmas

In page 4 lines 141-145 it is not clear who is indiovidualistic and if today's society has the values of the collective as such please clarify and connect with the following paragraph that is another idea but needs to be better connected

In the results discussion I definetely would include the CEPAL data which referes that LA had experienced a decresed economic growth previous to the pandemic which in addition to the pandemic effects were negative for the region and the fact that achievements of malnutrition improvements might be for the interacting factors associated with obesity incresed prevalences associated to food insecurity (FAO reports 2019, 2020 and previous )

In page 9 line 318 better mention the author I think you mean Roth, which corresponds to the reference 49 right ?

In lines 333 to aprox  346 what would be the food industry role if any? is not that easy that it seems out of the equation how to translate their role to cooperation with local systems? educating the industry according to the right values will be key for the future

In our experience ignoring and attempts to eliminate food industry in not the path on the contrary cooperation in an overpopulating world will be beneficial to feed people according to quality and sustainable standards such the ones you are proposing

Finally while I like the proposed model for public policy it is hard to envision how it will be translated into urban societies, maybe with a stronger emphasis with food health promotion on indigenous values that are underestimated in the region? and as you say in the conclusion an integrative approach, because we cannot forget the thousand of years of human evolution that cannot be erased and substituted by indigenous traditions ( I am here as the devil's advocate) How you see this integration ? How can an ordinary person living in an ordinary city building integrate the indigenous values and contribute to a sustainable food system in the region ?

Author Response

Dear Reviewer

Thank you very much for your comments, the observations made allowed me to give the text a greater argumentative depth, especially in the introductory section of the manuscript. I would like to comment that each of your suggestions were taken into account and incorporated into the manuscript, as you can see in the manuscript highlighted in red letters.

I loved the article in such a topic that is controversial and not easily spoken about. A little bit of the biopolitical context is necessary because Latin America is a region full of challenges, CEPAL has a good report on covid-19 pandemics evolution, also regarding food security status in the region. Venezuelan National Academy of Medicine (Gaceta Medica de Caracas) also, has a volume dedicated to covid 19 and its consequences. Also, I would include in the introduction a little bit on how the thousands of years of "humanization" cannot be erased and the dilemmas for feeding the global population exist.

Answer:

The topics of biopolitics, therapeutic foods and the food industry were incorporated in a timely manner, and the changes are shown in red inside the manuscript. The recommended references were helpful and allowed the improvement of the introductory section.

In page 4 lines 141-145 it is not clear who is individualistic and if today's society has the values of the collective as such please clarify and connect with the following paragraph that is another idea but needs to be better connected

Answer:

In response to your recommendation, the paragraph was redrafted to make it logical and coherent

In the results discussion I definitely would include the CEPAL data which refers that LA had experienced a decreased economic growth previous to the pandemic which in addition to the pandemic effects were negative for the region and the fact that achievements of malnutrition improvements might be for the interacting factors associated with obesity increased prevalences associated to food insecurity (FAO reports 2019, 2020 and previous)

Answer:

The outcome discussion section benefited from his suggestion, the ECLAC position was incorporated with some data supporting the evolution of the covid-19 pandemic.  In the manuscript one can see the substantial improvement of the first section.

In page 9 line 318 better mention the author I think you mean Roth, which corresponds to the reference 49 right ?

Answer:

Roth's reference was incorporated

In lines 333 to approx. 346 what would be the food industry role if any? is not that easy that it seems out of the equation how to translate their role to cooperation with local systems? educating the industry according to the right values will be key for the future. In our experience ignoring and attempts to eliminate food industry in not the path on the contrary cooperation in an overpopulating world will be beneficial to feed people according to quality and sustainable standards such the ones you are proposing.

Answer:

The discussion with the food industry and its possible role in an open innovation ecosystem was taken up again, and the considerations were precise.

Finally while I like the proposed model for public policy it is hard to envision how it will be translated into urban societies, maybe with a stronger emphasis with food health promotion on indigenous values that are underestimated in the region? and as you say in the conclusion an integrative approach, because we cannot forget the thousands of years of human evolution that cannot be erased and substituted by indigenous traditions ( I am here as the devil's advocate) How you see this integration ? How can an ordinary person living in an ordinary city building integrate the indigenous values and contribute to a sustainable food system in the region?

Answer:

The role of the food industry was integrated with urban societies in a context of food health in indigenous values, there is a lot to be said for this position, but I preferred to give some precise contributions to the discussion.

Title: Innovate or Perish: food policy design in a pos-pandemic and climate adaptation era

The topic and approach are of interest to the impacts that have been generated by COVID-19, for which I derive the following observations and reviews:

  1. Title: It is suggested to integrate the model of the indigenous population, since it is always addressed as a basis, but the title does not reflect it.
  2. Most of the introduction is presented in the form of a story, it is suggested to integrate data, figures it is argued. One example of several, descriptions of the role of indigenous societies in coping with environmental crises are addressed, but there are not enough data, figures or argumentation. Mention the geographic location of those studies that have been identified. Although a review trajectory is presented in Figure 1, it does not allow for arguments from the selection process and the established methodological criteria.
  3. Integrate in the introduction the experience in effective public policies that integrate the experience and ancestral knowledge of the indigenous population.
  4. Three objectives are addressed so it should be presented in a summary diagram how many studies and what type of design were selected and represented each objective.
  5. A COSORT diagram must be presented to present the appropriate selection of articles, that is, place the results were the inclusion criteria, were eliminated and the reasons and the end.
  6. Line 79 to 80: 59 studies were mentioned, were selected, and the references present 59 references, and those that were integrated in the introduction or others for discussion are not being considered?
  7. Line 146 to 154: Only the example of India is given when studying Latin America, so information and an approach to the selected region must be integrated. In addition, since they are general objectives and to establish effective policies, they must focus on studies or the region to be analyzed.
  8. Include a section where the geographic, political, economic, cultural characteristics, health statistics, climate, agriculture, food systems, food security, education, migration, inequities, especially of the indigenous population, are described and presented in a timely manner.
  9. Line 216 to 222: There is talk of activism and this is not mentioned in the study objectives, that is, to integrate this analysis of results. A site or link is presented that does not reflect what is presented: https://inmip.net/
  10. Table 1 is based on reference [5] Lugo-Morin, D.R. Global Mapping of Indigenous Resilience Facing the Challenge of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Challenges 2021, 467, 2 (1), 15; Therefore, it must be integrated with what was studied by the authors who focused on a study in Puebla, Mexico and that although other populations are mentioned, it is not representative of what is being considered in the objectives of this study.
  11. Line 380 to 391, integrate some graph or algorithm of these stages and, above all, specify if you want to integrate the participatory action research methodology or what methodology is suggested to be implemented and why? Likewise, this section complements the observation towards the title and introduction where the entire foundation of the indigenous population is not reflected in these first two sections (title and introduction).
  12. Finally, review and standardize or re-establish the objectives and purposes, variables and analyzes are integrated that are not reflected from the objective or main objectives or their justification.
  13. Mention the stages to implement the results of this analysis to the objectives or purposes.
  14. The conclusion must have the main objective and the findings found, all with argumentative data.

Author Response

Dear Reviewer

Their contributions allowed an improvement of the text and in the methodological part the CONSORT diagram was added, it was great because it gives more solidity to the methodological section. You can see the changes made inside the manuscript in red.

The topic and approach are of interest to the impacts that have been generated by COVID-19, for which I derive the following observations and reviews:

  1. Title: It is suggested to integrate the model of the indigenous population, since it is always addressed as a basis, but the title does not reflect it.

Answer:

The title was rewritten, integrating the indigenous component.

Answer:

The introductory section was improved, no figures were added, but data were incorporated, e.g. the process of humanisation and its configuration in the context of my object of study, data on the global crisis of the planet were added. The role of indigenous people and their food systems in the health crisis in the region is briefly argued.

  1. Integrate in the introduction the experience in effective public policies that integrate the experience and ancestral knowledge of the indigenous population.

Answer:

The reviewer's recommendation was addressed and some experiences from the region were added.

  1. Three objectives are addressed so it should be presented in a summary diagram how many studies and what type of design were selected and represented each objective.

Answer:

The consort diagram is included in the methodological section.

  1. A COSORT diagram must be presented to present the appropriate selection of articles, that is, place the results were the inclusion criteria, were eliminated and the reasons and the end.

Answer:

 Consort diagram added

  1. Line 79 to 80: 59 studies were mentioned, were selected, and the references present 59 references, and those that were integrated in the introduction or others for discussion are not being considered?

Answer:

New references were included and their integration by section can be seen in the consort diagram.

  1. Line 146 to 154: Only the example of India is given when studying Latin America, so information and an approach to the selected region must be integrated. In addition, since they are general objectives and to establish effective policies, they must focus on studies or the region to be analyzed.

Answer:

The reviewer's recommendation was heeded, others from Latin American case studies were added.

  1. Include a section where the geographic, political, economic, cultural characteristics, health statistics, climate, agriculture, food systems, food security, education, migration, inequities, especially of the indigenous population, are described and presented in a timely manner.

Answer:

The reviewer's recommendation was addressed, a sub-section on the current situation of indigenous peoples was added (see sub-section 5.1).

  1. Line 216 to 222: There is talk of activism and this is not mentioned in the study objectives, that is, to integrate this analysis of results. A site or link is presented that does not reflect what is presented: https://inmip.net/

Answer:

The introductory section briefly expanded on activism.

Answer:

The reviewer's comments (see subsection 5.1) have been expanded a little (see subsection 5.1).

Answer:

In order to give logic and coherence to the methodological section, a CONSORT diagram was integrated.

  1. Finally, review and standardize or re-establish the objectives and purposes, variables and analyses are integrated that are not reflected from the objective or main objectives or their justification.

Answer:

The objective of the research is precisely mentioned at the end of the introductory section, this objective is aligned with the categories of analysis set out in the methodology of the study and is observable in the CONSORT diagram.

  1. Mention the stages to implement the results of this analysis to the objectives or purposes.

Answer:

I am not sure I understand your comment, the results were explained according to the analytical categories used which in turn respond to the research objective.

  1. The conclusion must have the main objective and the findings found, all with argumentative data.

Answer:

The reviewer's recommendation was addressed, improving the conclusions.

Reviewer 3 Report

The current abstract is too poor by the standard of an international newspaper. Please rewrite. Include the research question, the purpose of the article, the main implications of the article, and a summary of the main results achieved by the study. The abstract requires a revision of native English proofreading. The abstract's English is surprisingly poor (other parts of the article are better), but it can be corrected without much effort.
The number of references can be increased. For a review article in a top journal, it can reach 80 (currently it is 59). I'm going to point out just two references about food supply chains in Latin America that you should use to anchor your study and thus form an adequate framework that strengthens your conclusions. Please cite DOI: 10.1016/j.gloenvcha.2014.02.005 and DOI: 10.1590/0104-530X2516-15. Please look for other equivalent references on food supply chains in Latin America. As a thumb rule, for each statement, there must be a reference. Avoid using lumped references [8-10], [15-16]. A clear separation and identification of the contribution of each reference should largely benefit the audience of the journal and may serve as a snapshot for further research on the same issue.
The journal is a benchmark journal on open innovation. Please connect tightly your research with the concept of open innovation, that is, that kind of innovation that becomes public and there is no need to pay royalties for their use in further developments. Please define open and closed innovation characterize your study as a doorstep to open innovation. Please use https://0-doi-org.brum.beds.ac.uk/10.3390/joitmc6040179 to define open innovation and cite it as an example in Latin America. Also note DOI: 10.1002/tqem.21700 as a suggestion for connecting aspects of innovation with local cultures. It can bring your study closer to a larger reality and benefit the journal's audience.
The last section of the article is poor and should be greatly improved, including implications of the results. In summary, this session should inform who can gain something from the study results and why they should pay attention to their results, that is, why these results are important.
Otherwise, it is a good article. If all the above points are met, it can be published. Congrats

Answer:

The reviewer's recommendation was heeded, and the bibliography of the study was increased and updated. Some references grouped together were retained due to the coincidence of ideas that underpin my approach
