MDPI has been celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2021 [1]. To further expand the open access publishing project of MDPI, we are still in the process of launching relevant new journals. MDPI already publishes the journal Buildings [2], which was indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) in 2020 [3]. To broaden our portfolio and cover the most interesting topics for the scientific community involved, we decided to launch one more journal, Architecture—An Open Access Journal (ISSN 2673-8945) [4], as one companion journal of Buildings.
This new journal focuses on the study of architecture and its environment, which refers to the art and technique of designing and building and spans engineering technology and humanities. The practice of architecture is employed to meet both practical and expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes.
In modern society, most people spend 90% of their time in the built environment [5]. With the rapid spread of COVID-19, residents are forced to work and stay at home to reduce contact. Therefore, the requirements for the livability of buildings have also increased accordingly. In addition, certain types of buildings such as hospitals also need to consider good ventilation effects to reduce the possibility of the airborne transmission of the virus. For example, improving the roof and other shell elements to increase the access to natural light can reduce internal virus activity, regulate the bioclimate of the building, and help fight COVID-19 to a certain extent [6]. From design drafts to entities, and then being put into use, the livability and resilience of buildings need to be considered from all aspects, where architects, engineers and constructors cooperate together.
We welcome the broad research community with expertise in the above topics to contribute to the development of this platform into a successful and well-established journal.
We will maintain the same fast and rigorous peer review process [7] for this new journal that you have grown accustomed to through our other publications. I hope you enjoy publishing with us.
