On Strong Approximation in Generalized Hölder and Zygmund Spaces †

Abstract

:
The strong approximation of a function is a useful tool to analyze the convergence of its Fourier series. It is based on the summability techniques. However, unlike matrix summability methods, it uses non-linear methods to derive an auxiliary sequence using approximation errors generated by the series under analysis. In this paper, we give some direct results on the strong means of Fourier series of functions in generalized Hölder and Zygmund spaces. To elaborate its use, we deduce some corollaries.

1. Introduction

The strong approximation, rather that providing approximations, is a tool of analysis. It is based on the summability techniques. However, unlike matrix summability methods, it uses non-linear methods to derive an auxiliary sequence using approximation errors generated by the series under analysis. This auxiliary sequence is further used to analyze the convergence properties of the series. To know more about the development of strong approximation methods, one can see the articles by Hyslop [1] and, Mittal and Kumar [2]. They give simple settings for strong approximation along with some comparison results.

2. Preliminaries

The classical L p [ 0 , 2 π ] spaces define the foundations of Fourier analysis. An L p [ 0 , 2 π ] ,   1 p space contains 2 π -periodic, Lebesgue integrable functions, which have finite norms denoted by · p and defined by

To measure the smoothness of the functions, we use the moduli of smoothness. For f L p [ 0 , 2 π ] , the rth-order modulus of smoothness ω r ( f ; t ) p is defined by

where Δ h r f ( x ) = k = 0 r ( 1 ) k r k f ( x + ( r k ) h ) denotes the rth-order forward difference of f at x with step-size h . The most basic spaces, which encode the smoothness properties of the functions, are the Hölder spaces. For periodic functions, Hölder spaces were first introduced for the space of 2 π -periodic continuous functions [3] (p. 51). Later, Das et al. [4] extended them to L p [ 0 , 2 π ] spaces. They defined the Hölder spaces H α ( L p ) , 0 < α 1 to contain functions f L p [ 0 , 2 π ] such that ω 1 ( f ; t ) p = O ( t α ) . The norm for f H α ( L p ) is given by f H α ( L p ) = f p + | f | H α ( L p ) , where

As a further generalization, Das et al. [5] generalized Hölder spaces, H α ( L p ) to H ω ( L p ) spaces where ω : [ 0 , ) [ 0 , ) is a non-decreasing function with lim t 0 + ω ( t ) = 0 . The H ω ( L p ) spaces contain f L p [ 0 , 2 π ] such that ω 1 ( f ; t ) p = O ( ω ( t ) ) . For f H ω ( L p ) , the norm is defined by f H ω ( L p ) : = f p + | f | H ω ( L p ) , where

The Zygmund spaces are defined using the second-order modulus of smoothness. The Zygmund spaces Z α ( L p ) , 0 < α 2 are defined as containing the functions f L p [ 0 , 2 π ] such that ω 2 ( f ; t ) p = O ( t α ) . The norm for f Z α ( L p ) is defined by f Z α ( L p ) = f p + | f | Z α ( L p ) , where

The Zygmund spaces Z α ( L p ) can be generalized in the same way as Hölder spaces H α ( L p ) . Let ω : [ 0 , ) [ 0 , ) be a non-decreasing function with lim t 0 + ω ( t ) = 0 . Then, Z ω ( L p ) generalizes Z α ( L p ) spaces via the requirement ω 2 ( f ; t ) p = O ( ω ( t ) ) for f L p [ 0 , 2 π ] . For ω ( t ) = t α , 0 < α 1 , the generalized Hölder space H ω ( L p ) becomes Hölder space H α ( L p ) . Similarly, for ω ( t ) = t α , 0 < α 2 , the generalized Zygmund space Z ω ( L p ) coincides with Zygmund space Z α ( L p ) . Because of the fact that ω 2 ( f ; t ) p 2 ω 1 ( f ; t ) p , the Hölder spaces are the subsets of corresponding Zygmund spaces. However, as the Zygmund norm is not same as Hölder norm on Hölder spaces, the Zygmund spaces do not generalize the Hölder spaces.
Let f be a 2 π -periodic Lebesgue integrable function. Then, the partial sums S n ( f ; x ) , n = 1 , 2 , of the trigonometric Fourier series of f can be written as

The summability techniques are an extension of the notion of convergence of a series in which we try to attach a limit to a non-convergent sequence. The summability methods may also increase the rate of convergence of an already convergent series. A summability matrix T = ( a n , k ) , n , k = 0 , 1 , 2 , is called a regular summability matrix if it satisfies:

In this paper, we present estimates of U n ( f , λ , x ) in H ω ( L p ) and Z ω ( L p ) spaces. These estimates help in gaining insights of the approximation error in Fourier approximation.

3. Results

First, we give some auxiliary results as lemmas to make the proof of the main results concise.
Lemma 1.
Let D k ( t ) be the kth Dirichlet kernel. Then,

The lemma can be proved easily.
Lemma 2.
