Dear Colleagues,
It is a well-known fact, that the existence of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is an important part of every economic system of the countries and their regions. They represent the actors of local markets, and their importance for regional development results from the characteristics that are attributed to them: they can quickly adapt to market requirements, they have an innovative function, they create new jobs and thus significantly affect the level of employment and many others.
The behavior of SMEs is affected by the situation in the economic environment, which is currently exposed to turbulent changes and imbalances that are connected mainly with global pandemic situation, digital technologies and international relations. The operating conditions of SMEs toward their sustainability depend on different external and internal determinants, which are associated with different types of risks. The application of risk management contributes to increasing the performance of SMEs, saving costs, maintain the SMEs’ reputation, and it reduces the negative events.
Although the topics about the role of SMEs in regional development, as well as risk management of SMEs are well elaborated, the connection between risk management of SMEs and regional development in a more comprehensive range is missing. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the level of knowledge about the possible causes and consequences of the risks, as well as the application of adequate measures to reduce them in the context of regional development.
The special issue provides the possibility to publish the high-quality papers focused on issues of risk management of SMEs in connection with regional development.
