Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue delves into the dynamic realm of 3D in vitro systems, building on the foundations of Volume I (https://0-www-mdpi-com.brum.beds.ac.uk/journal/bioengineering/special_issues/3D_Systems). Recognizing the limitations of classical flat in vitro models, Volume II focuses on novel and future approaches that provide insight into the inner workings of 3D in vitro systems, including cellular behavior, its continuous monitoring and control, as well as the characterization and identification of crucial aspects of extracellular matrix (ECM) analogues, microfluidic devices, and other aspects of engineered biological samples. We welcome original research contributions and review papers that delve into the multidisciplinary aspects of this field, spanning material characterization, viability assessments, continuous monitoring, and the intersection of engineering and biology in the context of 3D cultures. Topics can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design considerations and characterization of experimental set-ups for 3D in vitro systems;
  • Cellular dynamics in 3D environments (including cell mobility, phenotype expression, etc.);
  • Techniques for the continuous monitoring of critical parameters;
  • Multidisciplinary and future perspectives on bridging the gap between engineering and biology.

Authors are invited to submit original research papers or comprehensive review articles that contribute to the understanding and advancement of analytical approaches in 3D in vitro systems. Manuscripts should adhere to the journal's guidelines and be submitted through the online submission system by [deadline]. We look forward to your valuable contributions to this exciting Special Issue!

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
