Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Induction of effective B-cell and antibody responses is critical for combating viral infections. Antiviral antibody responses can include induction of IgM early in infection, subsequent IgG, and mucosal IgA. So far, worldwide efforts to develop vaccines that can elicit antiviral antibody responses against viruses, including measles virus, rubella virus, varicella-zoster virus, poliovirus, hepatitis B virus, influenza virus, and SARS-CoV-2, have been successful. Notably, the recent COVID-19 pandemic provided us with a large amount of data that helps us better understand the dynamics of B cells in response to viral infection. On the other hand, the difficulty in inducing broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV-1 due to Env's structural and highly mutable nature remains an obstacle to developing an HIV-1 vaccine. Furthermore, HIV infection causes the alteration of B-cell populations, such as accelerated differentiation of memory B cells to plasma cells, leading to numerical and functional impairment of B cells. Nevertheless, anti-HIV-1 neutralizing antibodies, if successfully induced, could help prevent HIV-1 infection in mucosal sites and enhance post-infection humoral and cellular immunity. Investigating B cells infected with the Epstein-Barr virus is another intriguing topic that may lead to a better understanding of host antiviral immunity and the pathogenesis of human lymphomas. This Special Issue welcomes Original Research articles on in vivo or in vitro studies and Review articles focusing on B cells in viral infections.
