Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Skeletal muscle biopsy has enabled the discovery and diagnosis of pathological entities in the last several decades. Moreover, the systematic study of muscle samples from human conditions and experimental models has proved to be a key tool to understand muscle physiology and physiopathology. Not only morphological evaluation based on histological stains including immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, but also biochemical, proteomics, and genomics approaches using muscle biopsies have been useful to increase our understanding of this organ. Currently, there is a need for the further correlation of findings among different techniques and the employment of novel diagnostic approaches such as digital pathology or artificial intelligence, among others.

Muscle biopsy is an invasive procedure, and a correlation between skeletal muscle biopsy findings with other diagnostic procedures is required. Non-invasive diagnostic procedures can be helpful in the monitoring of physiological or disease processes, but studies correlating with muscle biopsies are still needed.

In this Special Issue we invite research, protocol, and review articles covering the following potential topics:

  • Novel diagnostic techniques and tools based on muscle biopsies.
  • Correlations between muscle biopsy findings with other diagnostic procedures.
  • Accuracy of muscle biopsy in the diagnosis of muscular disease.
  • Description of experimental models using muscle biopsies.
  • Medical education strategies towards muscle biopsy teaching.
