Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

There is no need to expand on the hazard of hearing loss due to noise. Noise is ever-present in our everyday life, with varying sound levels and frequency content; so too is hearing loss, both occupational and recreational. Presently, very many professionals all over the world are involved in reducing noise levels and diminishing the incidences of the exposed population.

The use of hearing protector devices (HPDs) is still the most common of the ways to reduce the noise levels that enter the ear, even though hearing conservation starts with engineering noise control.

HPDs have been around for very long time. Some 1000 years BC, Homer sang about how Odysseus saved his sailors from drowning. He plugged their ears with beeswax, so they could not hear the songs from the Sirens and did not plunge into the sea to their deaths. This is the earliest reference we have of HPDs. Since then, there has been considerable progress in all issues related to those devices. However, there are still problems regarding their use or lack of use. The present Special Issue of Healthcare, “Hearing Protection in Industry and Recreation” will deal with some of those problems.
