Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Plants are sessile organisms that are affected by various factors such as biotic and abiotic stress. These circumstances lead them to develop defense mechanisms such as the production of secondary metabolites, which help in the adaptation process of the plant in stress situations. It is also known that they contribute to the attraction of pollinating insects, which contribute to the reproduction and distribution of the species. Secondary metabolites provide the plant with adaptation mechanisms, repel harmful insects and microorganisms, and generate soil–plant–environment interaction, in addition to providing benefits to consumers given the biological properties provided by said metabolites. In this sense, the exploration of the application of various stimuli that resemble biotic and/or abiotic stress conditions, to increase the concentration of secondary metabolites in the plant, is a current trend that has opened up various areas of research.

The general concept of this Special Issue is to provide an updated overview on the effect of various types of stress on the production of secondary metabolites. In particular, submissions of reviews and original research articles reporting novel scientific findings on the following topics, among others, are accepted:

  • Plant tolerance against biotic stress and the induction of secondary metabolites;
  • Plant tolerance against abiotic stress and the induction of secondary metabolites;
  • Innovative strategies that induce the production of secondary metabolites in the plant;
  • Hormetic effect of stress on the production of secondary metabolites Induction of secondary metabolites that improve the quality of crops.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
